A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

If you're anything like me, and you have some inexpensive guitars, they're likely all loaded with Duncans and upgraded electronics. I'm transitioning from having a truck load of cheap guitars, to a select few of "nice" guitars. So, when you sell said "upgraded" axe, do you:

1. Leave them in and hope that it speeds up the sale, knowing you'll take a hit on the pup cost.
2. Remove the good pups and sell them separately.
3. Offer the buyer a 2-price option.
4. Something else that I haven't thought of.

Part of the reason I ask this is, I would tend to want to offer more to forum bro's than I might to the general public.

I usually reinstall the original pickups. You can always depend on getting 30-40 dollars out of the Duncans on Ebay. If I think the guitar itself would not sell otherwise, I might leave a Duncan I didn't need in it.

I have a feeling that that will be the general consensus. But don't you hate it when you get a guitar, even a cheap one, dialed in, that you want to tear it back apart. It's like a child. :)

Re: A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

Interesting question. I've sold guitars with upgraded pickups before but I get the sense that I am not getting my money back on them. I think it depends on how much you like the pickups.... I have a guitar I want to sell that has 498T/490R in it and I'm not gonna bother pulling those!

Plus I already sold the stock pickups so I have nothing to replace them with...

...then keep it. :)

I've thought about doing the big downsize/upgrade, but I've gotten these cheaper guitars dialed in to my preferences so well, it's just not worth selling them.

That's exactly the #4 option that I was trying to pretend I didn't know.

Edit: Oops. Can I retract that? masta' c nailed it below. :D

If you're selling less expensive guitars to finance the "nicer" ones, then definitely pull the pickups and sell those separately, because you'll end up with more money in the end.

Besides, just because YOU really dig the upgrades doesn't mean the next guy will feel the same, especially if the buyer happens to be anyone on this forum...ha ha!

If it's not about the money, then don't be afraid to hold onto one or two that really stand out :)

Cool. That's it exactly. :fing2:

Re: A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

I'd put the original pups back in, but offer the upgraded ones for an additional cost. Or better yet, keep the good pups so you have an excuse to buy another guitar to upgrade.:headbang::headbang:

I usually sell them without pickups if it is on a forum. Everybody puts in their favorites anyway.

A music store owner told me recently that it doesn't matter what pickups are in a guitar, they don't affect the price at all. I guess the same could be said for hardware. In the end, it's still a cheap guitar. I don't believe it should be that way in the guitar community, but more often than not, that is the case.

Re: A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

I see guys sell guitars for $200 with $150 worth of pickups all the time...don't be that guy ;)

...buy them cheap, upgrade them, play them, keep them :bigthumb:

On the "other options" - donate them to a music charity, take the tax write off and move on - you get the feel good and a little something in your pocket.

Re: A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

Depends on the guitar I guess, but you usually don't get enough for the guitar itself, and the Duncans don't up the price enough to justify keeping them in. If I sell a cheaper guitar, I'm pulling the pickups. I have a bunch of stock and cheaper pickups in a bin that I can replace them with. Also, shipping kills you these days. And craigs list is a hassle with weeding through the scammers. So I end up just keeping the cheaper guitars rather than losing the money and dealing with the hassle. But maybe that's just me.
