A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

Re: A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

It just depends. There's guitars I've sold with some run of the mill DiMarzio or Duncan pickups, where I probably wouldn't have made much off of parting the thing (particularly if having to ship two packages instead of one). However, if we're discussing fancier pickups, like small custom winders or the higher end Duncans, then yes, it makes a lot of sense to part them out. Also depends on the guitar. If you have a relatively inexpensive Squier loaded with pickups that cost more than the guitar, it makes no sense to sell them installed.

Re: A penny for your thoughts on selling "cheap" guitars.

I've been trying to unload an LTD V500 w/ EMG's for years. I think I started trying in the $400 range. It was basically the guitar that replaced the DV8R after Mustaine bolted for Dean. Set thru maple neck w/ Rosewood board, Mahogany body, Grover tuners, EMG 81/60 combo, and mint condition. It's actually a great sounding/feeling guitar that I originally paid about $700 for. But every time I want to generate cash for new gear I try on craigslist and I get nothing but sub-$200 offers for it. I try to reason with them that the pickups alone are worth what they're offering and give them eBay links to prove it, to no avail. Looks like i'll be stuck with it forever as I just can't justify letting it go for that price. I'd rather donate it for free to somebody that really needs/wants a guitar than give somebody the satisfaction of getting it for $150. Anybody know good places to donate? I even tried contacting Wounded Warriors to ask if they had anybody in my area I could donate to. Never heard back from them.

I just don't like pointy guitars and active pickups anymore. It doesn't have a case and I don't feel comfortable packing/shipping it on eBay.
