A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Bump to keep this awesome thread going. I'm on an a8 kick right now. Anybody else want to chime in on alt 8 vs c8? Or maybe a hybrid with the two. I've never used alt 8 by the way. (Will change very Soon)

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

I liked everything about the Crazy8 except the attack, just seemed kinda dull (compared to what I've been using), which would've suited me fine two years ago, but I'm on this dunn-dunn-weedle-weedle kick now.

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

I have been using a double screw C8 in my 1988 Gibson SG-90 w/factory floyd: mahogany body, maple neck, 25.5" 24-fret ebony board w/ 250K V and 250KT w/ coil-split in a 50's wiring schema.

I added the 5-40 small head caps on the bass side, etc. to sort the bass which was otherwise too hairy .... the 250 pots made a huge difference in the range of tones that the 50's wiring offers over the 500's -- amazing lead/solo tone including the coil split which until this PUP I never liked at all -- I use a X88R > custom 6L6 based Fryette 252 > 1 x12" EVM 12L -- stunning cleans and OD without the usual noise between/under notes.

I have been using original double screw AH's from the 80/90's and double row JBs [in my "super strats"] and this one is a keeper.

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

Since this is a Alnico 8 thread , I don't understand why they put it in high dc resistance pickups ,
since the A8 is the perfect magnet to make vintage pickups better .
I play on air-Jazz-8 neck and on Demon-8 with no allen screws , and it facking smokes !
No mud , brutal round fast pick attack , even EQ , power .
What else do you need ?

Re: A Trio of 8's.... The verdict

I think "throaty rhythm tones" has me sold. That is one of my favorite things about the Duncan Distortion as a rhythm pickup, though the unwound strings can be a little too bright/crisp at times. Saying the Alt 8 has lead sounds like a JB or Distortion, but sweeter and no icepickiness sounds like a total win.

I never did get my hands on a Crazy 8, but did mag swap an 8 into a JB trembucker. If the Crazy 8 is in the same ballpark as the JB8, it is a definite win!
