a whoooooole lotta questions

well...time to get an amp..ive been playing through a little 15watt POS with no effects other than some " gain "..and while i do love it to death i really just need a bit of an upgrade!!

i really wanted to get a tube amp because i seem to like the sound i've gotten out of ones ive tried..i dont need anything huge..as..i dont really do any public playing...i mostly keep to myself however..i would LIKE to be able to annoy the people upstairs..

another thing im looking at is effects... i dont know if i need like a guitar processor..a modeler..what..basically here are a few of the things im looking for...

a VERY versatile delay...ive heard about being able to set delays MS or something ? basically id like to be able to change how much it repeats..how fast it repeats, how loud each repeat is..etc...

a REALLY cool wah..and maybe even a " talkbox " type thing..something along the lines of a banshee ? ive heard great reviews..however..im going for a somewhat clean sound...

and im not sure what to call this...but...is there anything i can get that would allow me to hold a note and bend it indefinately ? something that would just give me like a really long sustain but id like to be able to alter the sound by bending if possible.. i dont know if indefinately is possible but somewhere in the 1-2-3 minute range would be GREAT

Im also interested in something with multiple distortions..id like something that would really bring out palm muting ..but i also want something thats kind of the distortion or sound of the " crazy train " song..and maybe a few things in between

thanks for any / all the help in advance..you guys are the best :)!

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

You can find all of those effects, sans the wah on the Line 6 Spider series. The wah you'll have to get elsewhere, but Morley makes a nice one (actually several).

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

Get an amp and a seperate multi-effects unit - that would be cheaper than a bunch of pedals. For holding a note, I think an ebow is what you're after... but I'll let other ppl answer that one more confidently than I can...

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

I don't know how long you can hold it or bend it, but I've heard, among other things, that EVH used an old analog delay for the dive bomb at the end of Eruption. You can bend the note down by slowing down the delay. I'm sure there's some other little tricks involved, but I'm sure you could figure it out if you played around with it a while. The VAMP (see sig) will take care of a lot of the other stuff and you can pick up a midi footcontroller with two expression pedals (wah, vol, whatever you want) but I've heard that the effects from the controller aren't instantaneous. You can get the whole rig for less than $250, though. And there's very little difference between the VAMP and the POD, other than price.

The Blues Jr. is a nice, cheaper tube amp that is small enough to be portable. There are some other good ones out there. I'm just familiar with these. Just make sure you play them, especially the amp. And most people like the Blues Jr better after it's been modded.

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

if you are getting a multi-effect pedal, dun get the RP series from digitech. i bought one, and am currently only using it to train my timing with its drum machine due to the quality of its sound/tone. i mean i dint regret it or anything but i wouldnt buy another or recommend it. u might want to have a look into the boss GT multi-effect.

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

I like the Blues Jr amp and the Ampeg Jet is a nice little amp too. Orange makes a nice small tube amp.

It is important to realize that the amp and your guitar have a big impact on each other and on the effects you use. I recently compared my guitars through a Fulltone 69 pedal into the above amps and my Rivera Fandango 55W 2-12" combo amp. Each sounded so different, and the pedal reacted so differently to the different amps I was even shocked though I fully was expecting it and wanted to "measure" it in a sense.

As much as I love all tube amps, I'd recommend for your purpose looking at things like the Vox Tonelab and such things because you might get what you want in terms of sound in a more compact and affordable package.

If you're really not playing out or anything like that

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

i dont know how much im looking to spend..id like to keep it on the cheap side but i dont really wana have to skimp on things ya know ?

*edit*
about the ebow / fernandes thing....

i was thinking along the lines of in an effects pedal .. not a pickup or plectra

I use the vox clyde micoy wah pedal and it awsome. The only processor i've used is the digi pr-200. It's not terrible but its kind of a jack of all trades master of none. THe other anoying the is you have to scroll through so many option to change anthing. Single effects are easier to tweak because every perimeter has it own control. :newangel:

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

Maybe you could use a Digitech Whammy in conjunction with some type of sustain effect to achieve the effect you described...

i dunno if you have ever heard of the band "the toadies" but their guitarist clark vogeler does pretty much exactly that in most of their songs. they play the song "possum kingdom" where hes like "so help me jesus" and makeup your mind". anyway, clark plays a fender strat with a floyd rose locking vibrato system, and depending on which guitar hes playing, i think he sometimes uses either a JB or Hotrails in the bridge. in possum kingdom he used a hotrails. but his rig is a marshall jcm- 900, and he plugs into i think either an orange cab or a marshall. but his pedals are a tubescreamer, a big muff, and a micro amp. he gets minutes of harmonic sustain that he bends the crap out of. listen to the bridge of "possum kingdom"

Totally agree with you on this one, this is THE way to go.

Re: a whoooooole lotta questions

IMO, just get a nice Marshall AVT amp. they make the combos pretty small. Its not full tube, just tube preamp..but it should do. VOX makes a similar amp, tube pre. but it has all sorts of effects in it. i dont know the model number.

I dont know about bending a note indeffinately, but if you need a little more legnth look into a sustainer. as far as multi effects units you really cant go wrong as long as its not digitech.
