A wound pickup when one of the bobins cut...

Will apparently read 0K. But would it work? It seems that EVH's original pup had this problem...

Re: A wound pickup when one of the bobins cut...

if you have a one dead bobbin in a two conductor humbucker the pup wont work. if its four conductor you can make the working coil produce sound.

if a coil reads 0k that means there isnt continuity and signal cannot pass

I have seen pickups like that work. They were very weak but, they did produce some sound. How it happened and whats the science behind it, I dont know?

0K? Must be a digital meter. Another reason I prefer analog - I can easily see the difference between zero and infinity!!

If the break is around the middle of the bobbin, the windings can actually create a capacitor (i.e. two conducting plates separated by a dielectric). The low end and volume might be reduced but it can result in some signal getting out.

Re: A wound pickup when one of the bobins cut...

yeah, i think in EVH's case the coil break was because of impact from a sharp metal tool (screwdriver, no doubt) - if this was the case it might have both severed the coil and left it in contact with the same coil further down..

meaning, you both lose overall impedance and acheive mismatched coils.. not bad for a botch job :D
