I've heard that a Distortion is just a JB with a Ceramic magnet. If that's the case, then I don't see why it couldn't work. Maybe SD will start producing JB neck pickups.
They are NOT the same pickup...and it was Frank Falbo who confirmed they are not the same wind. Similar, but...
Just to be clear, I don't believe as an SD employee I ever confirmed that they are not the same wind, simply that I would not confirm it either way, in the interest of maintaining the trade secrets. If you can find anywhere I confirmed something while at SD, let me know. I wouldn't have wanted to spread disinformation then, nor would I want to now. Also I believed SD should be awarded the privelege of trade secrets then, and still believe it now.
As for the DDn5, It's ok in the bridge or neck. It's around 12.5k and as others have said, not based on the Jazz. Not based on anything really, and it makes a great hybrid coil too. Pair it with a DDb or JB, or anything from the Custom line, any P.A.F. output neck pickup, etc.
...SD trade secret and doesn't want to let it out, which I think is reasonable and respectable.
...i called MJ, she stated that JB & DISTORTION have the same wire, just not the same amount of turns, but close, MJ also stated that both the JB & SH6 W/A8 WOULD be comparable to a ALTERNATE 8 again thanks to all, rammer
They are NOT the same pickup. I think the forum has been through this at least 100 times and it was Frank Falbo who confirmed they are not the same wind. Similar, but not different. Pepe has also opened up both pickups and confirmed the winding pattern and coil geometry is different. He will not describe them in detail because he understands it as a SD trade secret and doesn't want to let it out, which I think is reasonable and respectable.
And Seymour Duncan is a company that doesn't lie to us to make an extra buck. They have been open since day one that the whole Custom line of pickups are the EXACT same bobbins, different magnets. IE the Custom being a regular ceramic, Custom Custom being A2, Custom 5 being A5, and they also give credit to the SDUGF when it is due, such as the '59/Custom Hybrid and the Custom 5 originating from the forum.
Nope, not related to the jazz, different wire gauge and everything, it's more like an overwound demon or underwound custom. The A5 DDn has a similar sound to a 59, more heat and a bit more growl and grind, and still a tad mid scooped, like the 59. It works great if it's the sound you're looking for.
