A8, A5 or UOA5 for shreddy neck

I have a Dimarzio Titan in the neck of my LP with a Distortion bridge. The neck Titan is not bad but it is comparatively dark and also relatively flat sounding like on cleans. What would you recommend to doctor it up? I was leaning A5 as the paf pro is A5 and not too different in output.

Re: A8, A5 or UOA5 for shreddy neck

I don't find either A8 or unoriented A5 suitable for the neck spot.

I prefer A5, A3 and A2 in the neck: all polished, and more or less in that order, but it really depends on the wind.

A5, and more so, the A2 will lower the resonant peak from ceramic because of the metal content.

A3 is going to reduce the level significantly.

Have you determined the thickness (and other dimensions) of the stock magnet? It doesn't appear to have AIR tech, so that works in your favor for mag swapping.

Re: A8, A5 or UOA5 for shreddy neck

A8's are high output & warm, not ideal for the neck. UOA5's and A2's are good in the neck slot in an underwound PU (lots of texture), but best for blues/classic rock. For what you want, an A5 or A4 would be better.

Sigh. Here we go again, scratch that, here *I* go again with the A4...

What shredder uses an A4? Paul Gilbert's attempt to be a jazz/blues guy with the awful-sounding PAF Masters not withstanding.

But hey, magnets are cheap enough, try an A4. If it does the trick, put up a recording and I promise not to speak out so strongly against them next time, assuming I concur.

Lindy Fralin's not hanging around here, A4's are his favorite magnet.

Didn't know Lindy Fralin was a shredder. Any recommendations of material I should listen to in order to better educate myself?

Re: A8, A5 or UOA5 for shreddy neck

Thanks guys. Sorry to ignite an argument. I'll check the specs and start with an a5.

Re: A8, A5 or UOA5 for shreddy neck

A5 for sure. A2 is a bit muddy in the neck especially for shredding clean articulated licks.

Re: A8, A5 or UOA5 for shreddy neck

If the signal chain doesn't emphasize bass, then an A2 with a brighter wind won't be a problem. If the same patch is used for a DD in the bridge (as in the case of the OP), then something like a Pearly Gates in the neck won't be muddy for articulated licks (either clean or hi-gain).

...however the coils in a Titan are nothing like those in a Pearly Gates.

You don't need to apologize. You did nothing wrong.

It's just that "gregory" simply can't stand being contradicted and, as for some unknown reason he hates A4s, he'll bite the head off of anybody that says otherwise.

He's obviously in love with his own voice, so to speak. The likes of him don't usually live long in Forums with many very experienced, capable and tech-savvy people like this one. In the meantime, you just need to live with the signal/noise ratio being lower. Oh, well...

/Peter
