Re: A8 "character"?
Heh, I bought it on a whim from JB_From_Hell here. IIRC he took the screw coil of the JB and slug coil of the Custom. The highs get smoothed out but they still cut, and some of that dry crunch from the Custom mixes with the singing JB quality for soloing. Great harmonics available. It's fat, fairly honest and clear for heavy rhythm. It is surprisingly dynamic and cleans up VERY well if you roll back the guitar volume but is still touch sensitive for a hot pickup under mid-high gain.
It was in my Schecter C-1 Classic, mahogany/rosewood neck-through with maple top, either paired with a Fulltone Fat Boost 3 fairly neutral but less bass more treble, or FullDrive 2 set low. It loves that extra juice and never got too muddy at practice or gigs even with more of a boost on the Lead channel. Used mainly for heavy prog rock and 90s sounding stuff.
Here's a two-year old demo, this is being redone this fall along with 8 other songs but you can get a great picture of it in a rhythm context in the verses (RHY2 channel with a bit of FatBoost), in the quiet chorus I just roll the volume back halfway, and then if you skip past all the delay-y stuff to 4:00 you can hear it wide open for a lead. At 4:50 there's one guitar playing the chorus riff and what you hear there is pretty representative of the cut/smoothness both at once.
I was pretty happy with this tone and almost want to put the JB/C8 back in! It served me sooooo well in this guitar that it might just end up living there if the next couple swaps don't work out. If you ever have a chance to try one, or put one together, give it a shot and crank that $h!t up.

I haven't heard much about this combo. Can you tell me about it? What it's used in, amp, playing style, etc? I'm a fan of A8s, love the JB in most situations, and kinda dig the Custom in my limited use. I'm very interested to know how this hybrid performs.
