A8 in neck pickup?

It seems like conventional wisdom is that an A8 is too much magnet for a neck pickup but I also see posts about people having trouble balancing high gain bridge pickups with A5 neck pickups like the 59.

Has anyone actually tried an A8 in a 59n or other neck pickups? I'm curious about how that would pair with a JB8 or Alt 8...

Re: A8 in neck pickup?

Ibanez Super 70 had AlNiCo 8 magnet, also Maton uses AlNiCo 8 humbuckers in both position on their guitars, so it can be done, and it works.

I haven't experiment with AlNiCo 8 in neck slot myself, but I can see it working for some applications.

I have, precisely in a '59n. Mud city. Like the Houston area after the hurricane. And that's the cleans.

It gets pretty bad with just a pinch of gain, and it gets much worse after that.

I tried it with a set of jazz neck. so, both were of the neck variety, and I loaded up both with an A8. Instant Michael schenker. very clean wind, preferably slightly underwound,g ives you a lot of treble so the A8 balances that out just fine.

Re: A8 in neck pickup?

A8 is a strong magnet with quite a bit of string pull.
Neck pickups sound better when they're not overly hot.

An A4 or A5 bridge pickup often sounds good for soloing on the neck position, but A8 could get way too pushed.
For the record, I've never tried an A8 magnet in the neck.

Re: A8 in neck pickup?

Somebody on the forum put a ceramic in a 59b a few years back. As I remember, they described it as a fire breathing monster. Probably be okay in a dark guitar, maybe with 250K pots to take off a little of the harsh.

Re: A8 in neck pickup?

I have not used A8 in a neck pup. Give it a try.. Alil off what your asking, but I get a great balance with the 59b/4, custom 8 combo in my explorer..
