About to pull the trigger on a new speaker

I have recently been looking at speakers to upgrade from the stock 70/80 in my Blkstr HT40 1x12 combo. I have looked at celestion, weber, WGS, and Eminence. So far it looks like i'm leaning towards a speaker from WGS the Retro 30 to be precise. I like the high end sparkle that it gives which would be great since my combo is kind of dark sounding already. Also they say it's very versatile and from the clips I have seen sounds good both clean and with drive.

I was looking at the Alnico BlackHawk which sounds awesome from the clips has a very lively 3D tone to it but I don't think it will hold up for hard rock and metal so i'm going to wait and save up and put one in a 1x12 extension cab and use it for different applications.

So far I think I want the Retro 30 but from Eminence I was looking at maybe the Governor or Wizard but neither one sounded great by themselves but sounded awesome together.

How do the Governor and Wizard compare to the Retro 30 for those that have used em?

Re: About to pull the trigger on a new speaker

I use a 2X12 cab with my Blackstar HT20H, loaded w/ WGS ( a Retro 30 and a Reaper HP). I like their sound very much, but my experience with these WGS compared to my other cab loaded w/ the Celestions that WGS claims to be emulating, is that they are 'warmer' and slightly darker. If you don't want that, perhaps WGS isn't for you.

I'm about to purchase two Eminence speakers (a Swamp Thang and a Wizard) to load in a newly purchased 2X12 cab. I've only heard sound demos of them and read their spec.s, but on that basis, I'm going to proceed.

Id go with a Governor... they can be had pretty cheap used, and if you dont like it you can always resell or trade.

The Eminence Red Fang is the way to go. It has an alnico magnet and is a bit expensive, but one of the best speakers around. It's rated at 50w and will be the perfect compliment to your HT40. I used to run a 2x12 of Red Fangs with my HT100 head and then with my Series One 100 head.

A big HECK YEAH to this! :)

One of my 4x12s is loaded with 2 Wizards and 2 Swamp Thangs; couldn't be happier!

As promised:

Sorry if the level is a bit low, this is ready for mastering.

Re: About to pull the trigger on a new speaker

Thanks Ben. Good job and nice sound. I ordered a Swamp Thang and a Wizard for my newest 2X12 cab.
When you mic your cab, assuming you do, which speaker do you mic? (either for recording or more so for live?)

Re: About to pull the trigger on a new speaker

Well, for that recording, I mic'd the entire cab with a single Audix D2 from 2ft away.

For live, I typically do stage volume only, so it has never come up. :)

For my new recording project (in preproduction now; recording guitars late this month/early next), I will be mic'ing the drivers separately; probably using a combination of mic's on each driver.

Re: About to pull the trigger on a new speaker

I replaced the stock 70/Eighty in my Blackstar 1/12 with a WGS retro and could not be happier. The WGS is tighter overall is more defined on the top and has more THUMP in the bottom. Trust me here that it made a HUGE difference swapping the 70/Eighty to the WGS Retro!!
