acoustic pickup idea....

super rad stuff

Skaforlifeologist
ok, so soundhole pickups. they slip in 'n' out, and are easy to put on/take off. i was thinking though, if you were to hook it up to volume and tone pots, what value would you use? i'm thinking 1meg or even 2meg to get the most highs, but i have no experience in the matter. specifically i'm thinking of the SD woody pickups, probably the SC version since my acoustic can get boomy at times. but, what if i hooked the pickup to a volume/tone setup, stuck the pots on a drilled out panel(i'm thinking an SG back panel or similar) along with the output jack, and put velcro on the back of the pots and the top of the guitar? it'd be a less permanant way to "electrify" an acoustic i think. if it's a viable option to stick hook pots up to an acoustic pickup, i might do it.

btw this is just a random "off the top of my head" idea, and probably won't do anything about it for a couple months.

Re: acoustic pickup idea....

i have the SC on an Ibanez acoustic guitar. the stock piezo pickup was fine but the onboard preamp was crap. i wired the SC straight into the mono jack so that there would be no external wire hanging out of the soundhole.

i have no idea what would happen if you add pots.

Re: acoustic pickup idea....

it's an interesting idea, i'm wondering how you could estimate the value of pot to start with...

:dunno: i'm an electric guitar kinda guy though, so i'm just guestimating 500k-1meg for a humbucker and 250k-330k for a single.

another thing i was thinking of whilst in the shower was hooking up a soundhole humbucker to the volume/tone pot setup, and have two mini switches to hook it up for separate coil cuts, in the same manner as the triple shot rings(two coil cuts, both uncut=series, both cut=parallel)

i'd only be guessing.
with the controls mounted outside the guitar it'd be easy to add stuff on tho

Re: acoustic pickup idea....

bump

hasn't anyone on here hooked up a soundhole pickup to regular audio pots?

never had to... i got me one of these here things

the pots are 250k from what i remember last time i opened it up, and it a single coil.

Re: acoustic pickup idea....

^cool. seeing as that's the only example i've seen however and it still follows the loose baseline of 250/single 500/dual, i'll just have to go ahead and pioneer this a bit:D

Re: acoustic pickup idea....

If your guitar gets boomy, why bother with a tone pot - you'll have it full open all the time anyway right? Just put in a volume one.
How you go about it I dunno though!

And look at the Artec MSP-50. I go one and they're very good for the money. I drilled a hole for the jack, so it looks nice and tidy.

Re: acoustic pickup idea....

Whether the guitar is boomy, matters not in this situation. You won't be able to tell with a magnetic soundhole pickup.

Ryan, if you're looking to electrify an acoustic, and don't have much to spend shoot me a PM. I kinda feel it to be disrespectful to speak about "other options" on a forum meant for a specific brand.

I dunno about that. I'm fairly sure I've read Frank Falbo saying on here he's got DiMarzios in some of his guitars.
