ADA MP-2

The singer of our band brought some stuff to practice last night for me to check out. One of the things is an ADA MP-2. I have no experience with these type of rack units. Do I need a power amp to use it? Can I use an amp? Into the effects return? Watched some videos on it, and it seemed some were going into an amp. Just want to know how before I hook it up and mess with it.

Re: ADA MP-2

You will need to connect it either to a separate power amp or to the receive in an effects loop. Let us know what you think! The MP-1 is one of my all-time favourites!

Yeah, this was a preamp designed to be run with a power amp. I remember the ads on the back of guitar magazines, with Atomic Tommy M of UFO at the time.

I think that must have been the MP-1. The MP-2 didn't surface until 1991 or so, and by then I think Tommy was gone?

Yeah, the "Atomic" dude ad was for the MP-1.

Back then, I always wondered who the hell he was; since he was the featured player (while Paul Gilbert, etc IIRC was in the background of the ad of all things)...

Re: ADA MP-2

I don't know why anyone would want equipment that old when it screams late 80's - early 90's???

Re: ADA MP-2

I never got a chance to try the MP-2 but I played an MP-1 for almost 20 years. I still have 6 of them in various stages of disrepair!

Re: ADA MP-2

Ahh yes, the MP-1. I remember Tommy- good player. But didn't last very long and sort of disappeared.

Re: ADA MP-2

MP-1 is the one you think of when 80's rack metal comes up.

The MP-2 was just a natural progression: More adjustable parameters, more gain. Hate myself for not buying an MP-1 a long time ago for $100. But I wouldn't mind owning an MP-2.

Just because you have the gain doesn't mean you need to use it, and more parameters in a preamp is more.

Re: ADA MP-2

Don't forget - they make these now also...

I have two MP-1s. I am old and/or weird, but that is still THE sound to me.

I wonder what Atomic Tommy did to get the center spot. I like him fine, but those are some A-level names surrounding him!

Yeah It's not like you'd own anything that old !

One of these days when I have time I'm going to do vids on all my Rockman gear; separate and combined.

I have X100B, Sustainor, Distortion Generator, Stereo Chorus, Stereo Delay, MIDI Octopus

Re: ADA MP-2

All tongue-in-cheek of course... trying to emphasize just how much Sirion is stuck in the 80's...

(yes, that was tongue-in-cheek as well)

I still have my MP-1, B200S power amp and the MIDI controller footswitch... purchased new back in 1989...
with an Alesis Quadraverb to complement.

Mincer stated he was in UFO. But UFO ain't UFO without Herr Schenker, so this guy must've joined after Michael left.

I also wondered what brand guitar Atomic was using... thought the headstock said "Killer"... but turns out it's actually "Hiller".

Re: ADA MP-2

I've never owned an MP-2, but I've played both the MP-1 & MP-2, and I've owned both stock and Voodoo Amps Modified MP-1s. Of the three I thought the Voodoo sounded the best with the stock MP-1 a relatively close second. The MP-2 had more gain and the EQ was supposed to compensate for the MP-1's shortcomings, but I think it fell a bit short. It had plenty of gain, but clarity suffered compared to the MP-1 which already wasn't great. The Voodoo MP-1 also did a far better job of fixing the EQ gaps found in the stock unit. I still have my MC-1 footswitch as it makes a great, basic midi controller, but I sold my other ADA gear over the last few years.
