Im changing the rhythm/treble ring on one of my les pauls from cream to black.
Anyone got any tips on removing these or has done it before? Is there an easy way to get it off without damaging the finish?

Cheers.

Re: advise needed

It's not glued on, at least none of mine have been. It just sits underneath and is held in place by the washer from the 3-way switch.

lets see...

im guessing f22 has epiphones and innocent has gibsons, because i have tried it on 2 epiphones and they seem to be glued or something like that on there. i was wondering the same thing actually, anyone know how to get them off of epi's?

Re: advise needed

Thanks for the replies, Yep its an Epi and yep its stuck, as far as i know its not glued it just has a sticky back on it, all the same i dont want to have to hack the thing off.

Anyone else?

Re: advise needed

If it is glued on 3M makes a Wax & Adhesive remover. If you can get your thumb nail under it? Use the 3M on a Q-tip and carefully work it off.:)

Re: advise needed

Got it! I used a .38mm pick i had lying around, slipped it under and ran it all the way round, now i just need to get rid of the sticky residue it left. Would guitar polish work? Again i dont want to rub it into the finish and scratch it up.

Re: advise needed

The polish took it off, with a bit of elbow grease. Don't know if i will even put the black one on, kinda looks cool the way it is now, see what it looks loke with the switch back in.
Anyway thanks for the help guys!.

Re: advise needed

Get some trumpet oil to get rid of the sticky residue. Then use guitar polish for final cleanup. Yes, you read it right, trumpet oil. I've used it for years on guitars that had stickers on them where removing them left that sticky residue. Just let the oil sit for a minute. When finished, you can't even tell there was anything there.

Re: advise needed

has anyone ever tried goo-gone?? meant to take off the residue.

Works on carpets, upholstery, clothing, tile, glass, grills, appliances, vinyl, wood, draperies, autos, boats and fiberglass. so is it safe for guitarS??

I've always been afraid of it reacting with the finish (especially nitro), although I've never actually been brave enough to try it and confirm/deny this :laugh2:.

Re: advise needed

WD40 is an awesome gunk remover - don't leave it on too long. And - why do you care? You are just putting another ring over it?

Re: advise needed

i just felt like taking it off. i think it looks pretty cool. im going to replace it for a more accurate gibson one later on though, (with gold print instead of black epi) but im digging the look without one right now.
