Ahhhh! Les Paul bridge pickup!

JB? Custom? I've been torn between these two forever. Perhaps even a Custom 5? I would use it for Led Zeppelin through heavier rock songs, like GNR and stuff.

Re: Ahhhh! Les Paul bridge pickup!

I have had lots of pickups in my LP and the Custom is in there now.
I like the Seth Lover a lot, for pure classic rock tone. I like the Custom for a little more umph :D

I use the same setup in my Explorer! Its my favorite combo! I think you will like it alot!

Re: Ahhhh! Les Paul bridge pickup!

The JB is Duncan's #1 selling pickup. Amazingly enough, it seems like most people here find it to be a little to aggressive in the upper mids/treble. It does sound cool when turned down a bit...kinda Tele like. It's a pickup that always impresses the heck out of me when I hear it again after not having heard one in a while, but then I get tired of it and it seems to hurt my ears. Weird!

It's Seymour's favorite humbucker but he uses it with 250K pots which bleed off some of the treble even when on "10". I tried that but it made the JB a little dull sounding to my ears.

Anyways: I'd go for the Custom.

Yeah...I feel much the same way about it. I'll tell you one thing though: it's my favorite humbucker when split or in parallel. Very good "single coil" tones when split or in parallel...maybe the best I've heard. But in series it's just a little "to much" for me. To loud and hard sounding. But it still remains Duncan's #1 selling pickup! Why do you suppose that is? Lew

I'm torn between the JB and Custom in an LP myself.
For some reason I can't picture a JB in anything but a strat/Jackson type guitar. That's why I can't do it in the Les Paul. But yeah, I love Ceramic/A2 bridge/neck pickup combos in Les Pauls, it's the way to go I think. Lew, have you tried 300k pots with the JB? I'm thinking that may be the cure for it. I think it's the best selling pickup because it's the most esteemed, the Seymour Duncan JB is easily the most recognizable and famous humbucker around. People actually like the Custom more, but the JB has just earned such a name for itself that people buy because they hear such great things. Even if it's the bestselling, you can't say how many of those people end up taking it out of their guitars.

I have wondered the samething. I would say becasue, they are used OEM pickups in alot of guitars and also alot of "Hype" about them.

Re: Ahhhh! Les Paul bridge pickup!

I've always thought the JB sold the most because it sounds noticeably better and richer than the vast majority of stock pickups...like a lowest common denominator pickup that the most amount of players will agree sounds better than stock. Also, the name implies an affiliation with one of the greatest players of all time. On top of that, Duncan puposely markets it hard, and retailers request them because they've been popular for so long. In addition, people see that it's Seymour's personal favorite Duncan, in his most played guitar.
