Re: AIR ZONE v Custom Custom v Breed v Rio BBQ POLL

I can only comment on the Rio vs the CC as those are the two I've tried. I liked the CC better. The Rio was too dark and bassy and not articulate enough for me. It didn't have smooth, singing highs like the CC has. I find the CC brighter and more articulate, and very smooth. I know some don't like its low end distortion but I like a little give so to speak, and I think its overall tone is just so good.

for me the air zone
I just got a TB-11 CC and even though i think it is a very nice pup it is not as
"balanced" as the AZ it stays a bit too "middy" even woith a all maple neck
the rio BBq is good but like jeff5 said it is too dark
the breed to me was too smooth ,not enough edge
the V hot paf is fabulous and to me is much nicer than the CC or bbq and breed
for the older classic tones and the air zone is a fatter toned version of that

Do any of you feel the VHOT PAF might be a tad thin at times, esp in thin bodied guitars?

O, what are you doing brother! You can go to Wolfetone and have Wolfe wind you a Marshallhead - this thing is the best I have ever played! The BBQ is not dark by the way. With the BBQ, the guitar makes all the difference...if you guitar is naturally dark or dull, the BBQ will make it worse because it is fairly transparent. The BBQ is pretty bright and lively in my LP.

The C-5 is great but can sound way too scooped in the wrong guitar.

I've only played the breed bridge and breed neck. They both rip. I have a pretty bright sounding rack, so the breed is just what the doctor ordered. Killer harmonics, high output, smooth, clean, etc. The bridge model in my charvel predator is my #1 humbucker right now.

A BBQ came in the bridge of a guitar I bought recently, and I found it very dark and dull sounding. Out it came and in went a C5.

I do, that is why i opted for ther air zone in place of it
what i love about the AZ is that it still sounds very paf but much fuller
it reminds me of the V hot paf but never gets thin.:)

Tastes are tastes...

but I never understood why the BBQ sounds dark and muddy to some people.

I swapped out a Genuine Texas bucker for a Duncan Jazz because, yes it was too dark and bassy, but the bridge BBQ is perfect, IMHO.

Here's me playing my BBQ on video:

...note how the sound gets dark when I switch to the neck pickup.
That's the Genuine Texas.

I gave it to a guy with a really bright sounding Ibanez guitar and he is extremely happy, whilst I really like the Jazz Neck I got from him.:)

Different pickups work for different guitars.

Custom custom is the only one of those I used. I like it very much. Even in my old Squier it sounds killer. Great definition and tone, easy on the mud. I play high-gain mostly.

It won't sound the same in every guitar/amp setup. As I said, the guitar I had it in is pretty heavy in the low mids, so this pickup sounded like I had a blanket over my speakers. The C5 I installed is a better match, as it's a bit scooped in the mids with strong lows and highs. Combine that with strong mids from the guitar and you have a very even, balanced tone.

The Airzone is a nice pickup but I still find it a bit muddy in most guitars.

Re: AIR ZONE v Custom Custom v Breed v Rio BBQ POLL

Ive only heard the breed, Air zone, & the custom custom. I prefer the cc. Its more 'balanced' in a way. It handles cleans better without sounding thin & stays fat dirty.

Sounds like you need to play with the height a bit. I find the AZ to be very balanced, tight and clear in my Axis.

Re: AIR ZONE v Custom Custom v Breed v Rio BBQ POLL

It does sound nice but once you try a WCR or Wolfetone there is no going back.

agreed! However, neither one of them make a pup that fits in my Axis :(. BTW, what's your favorite bridge pup in your Mccarty?

Hey bro.....the WCR Fillmore was awesome, the PRS #10s rocked and the Wolfetone Caretakers rock so I through times when I think I have the best pickup...then i switch. LOL!

Bro, I think I may have to try the Virtual hot PAF. Does it have clarity and sound a full as the BBQ? They are pretty cheap.
