Albion Amps

Gear Ho
I strolled through Guitar Center tonight, and spotted a used Albion TCT50H on it's 212 cab. I'm always curious to hear amps I've never heard of, so I checked it out with one of the new Custom Classic LP's....sweet guitar!

Apparently, the owner Steve Grindrod had some affiliation with both Marshall and Vox, and this amp really gives up the British goods. It's two channel with a lot of bells and whistles I wasn't sure should have been added to the circuit, but they're there.
The amp has great control over every shade of clean, midgain, and super chunk Marshall/Mesa Rec tones. Pretty impressive. Plus, one of the bells and whistles is reverb, which sounds nice dialed really low. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention one of it's greatest features....the ability to mix the two channels together! You can great a humongous sound with that option.
It's a little drier sounding than my Bogner XTC, but covers much of the same ground.

One thing I found interesting was that it had master volume, volume, gain, and drive. So, you can really dial in shades of gain. This is something that's a step beyond your typical Marshall like a DSL. And the look of the amp is cool. I love the glossy front panel. I give these amps a thumbs up.
A really good amp for a surprisingly reasonable price.

Re: Albion Amps

That's pretty cool, I could see Tony Iommi playing some serious riffage through that!

Re: Albion Amps

I've never heard of them. I only took a quick look on Google, but I can't even find one for sale over here. They seem cool, though.

EDIT: There's only two on Ebay and they're both in the US.

Re: Albion Amps

I've never heard of them either. I was hoping they were made here in the Midlands, in West Bromwich where I live.... the local football team is West Bromwich ALBION! ha ha

Re: Albion Amps

Aren't they made by Wharfedale (the hi-fi speaker manufacturer?) Pretty sure I read about these a few years ago; originally they were going to be marketed under the Wharfedale name then it was changed to Albion, not sure why.

Could be imagining it though...

Re: Albion Amps

I've had my Albion TCT35H 35 watt head for a few months now and really like it.The flexible EQ [channel A pre gain, channel B post gain],separate gain stages,Edge control,Negative Feedback switch and 33% power option really add lots of tonal versatility. Also, the effects loop is really good [switchable line/instrument/bypass levels] and the reverb quite usable.

Re: Albion Amps

I needed another 2x12 cabinet... I could not turn down the price... Bluesbreaker size and style with Valance. I have not recicved it yet. I was actually here looking for reviews. I have WGS GB and Reaper if I don't like the speakers. But, I will report back for the sake of anyone looking for the same thing I am.

No, I think you're correct. I was watching a vid on Youtube about a year ago and a guy mentioned that he owned one of these that was made under the Wharfedale name.

Re: Albion Amps

My local store (one of the only two in town) decided to stock them.

I messed around with them several times, but was unimpressed with all of them.

I am not sure what the prices diffs are, but i would rather go for a 30W Cornford Roadhouse than the top-of-the-line Albion. But that is just me.

http://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-a...ouse-30w-all-tube-uk-made-guitar-amp-head.asp - 499.00 quid

PS : it is my understanding that they have not sold a single unit yet.

Re: Albion Amps

The cabinet comes today.... of course I plan to modify it to a open back right off...
But, I am anxious to hear the speakers, not being able to find a single source of information about them, specs or otherwise.
I am ready to put a WGS GB and Reaper in, just in case...
But even through these horrible videos they have, the speakers don't sound bad, I may make one... an other horrible video that is! LOL

Re: Albion Amps

I am very pleased with these speakers... and I am very picky. So this is cool!
I do prefer the compression and sparkle of my WGS GB's and Reapers more...
But, If this were the only speaker I had... I would be fine.
I find them (Albion/Wharfdale) to be very balanced and no cardboard sounding mids which I dislike in so many other speakers.
Way Cool! I got this to make an open back cabinet with, which I will do so... But, It is great as is...
Cosmetically... I would have preferred the wood valance... maybe I can replace that myself.

It is a surprisingly narrow cabinet depth wise but... Hey, If it sounds good.. it does...

Re: Albion Amps

Actually, with the Marshall on top, I like your cab with the solid tolex look, not the wood valance.:dunno:
