Alex Lifeson - Fly By Night album gear

Re: Alex Lifeson - Fly By Night album gear

He is increasingly becoming my favourite guitarist from that era.

I think he's pretty underrated when it comes to most "top guitarist" lists. He can shred with the best of 'em. Jimmy Page is said to have called Rush his "favorite new band."

When did Pagey say this? That would be cool for me being that Led Zeppelin and Rush are my two all time favorite bands.

Re: Alex Lifeson - Fly By Night album gear

He may be underrated these days, but back when I was starting on guitar, Alex was the dude! I was a freshman, and one of the juniors who was a hot guitarist was really into Rush. He got me turned on to them. Before that, I just couldn't get past the vocals.
Lifeson was voted best rock guitarist at least one year by readers of Guitar Player magazine. You might be able to go to their site and see who's won their poll every year. After Van Halen got big, then him and the shred dudes won the best rock guitarist distinction every year for a while.

I have an issue of GP with an interview with Lifeson and Lee. That was when Roll the Bones came out. At that time Lifeson was using PRS's, but had Evans single coils pickups installed in them. He liked their squeaky clean sound. Later he recorded Counterparts with humbucker equipped PRS's and said he'd forgotten how good a humbucker axe through a cranked up amp sounded.

On the videos he's funny and I'll bet he's a nice guy also!
Probably very true. Just maybe not on New Years' Eve after he's had a few!

Alex's side of the Rush site is funny...last time I checked anyway...little cartoons from Big Al's Tiki Bar or something like that. "Rob Lowe! Rob Lowe would know a daiquiri from a single malt!"

Got my tix for July at the Tweeter Center in NJ. I'll be at the back of the 100 section. (Good name for it as that's how much the tix cost!) This will be about the 17th Rush show for me in almost as many years.

Re: Alex Lifeson - Fly By Night album gear

I knew a few guitarists in the 80's who played almost nothing but Rush exclusively.

Started listening to more Rush again... (took a bit of a hiatus for a while, dunno why) but DAMN! The opening riff to Finding My Way just destroys! Lifeson's a bona fide badass.

I'd bet that whole thing was provoked a bit by the cops!
