I was told that Alexi Laiho has a wah pedal permanently on during his solos to give him a "scratchy" sound. Is this true? Would getting a wah pedal help to get closer to his sound?

His old sound? No. His newer sound? Maybe. I know he used it a bit on certain solo's. Whether or not it was on all the time, though... I doubt it. You'd be able to tell.

To me, it sounds like that stupid EMG HZ running through a low gain setting on a peavey 5150, which is what he uses.

i've read the same in an interview with alexi and the units he uses seem to be pretty demolished from years of use(non working pots on the amps and so on) which might contribute to his tone in some way.

Yeah; and he's since replaced the Peavey poweramp with a VHT 2150 IIRC.
