I wish Duncan would reissue the original 59s too!

Yeah I've got some 80s Butyrate 59s that sound quite a bit different that all the modern ones. I'm sure it could have aged some but it's not just "softer " sounding it's got a different texture going on an everything.

One thing I forgot to throw in was Steve Stevens. He used a JB or years. At some point he claimed they "changed and he went to a Custom Custom. If I remember correctly he went from the CC to the Rebel Yell after having BKP analyze some old JBs.

SS was big into the JB in the 80s and 90s. BKP guys think the Holy Diver is their answer to the JB, but my money is on the Rebel Yell...which is scatterwound.

I have sets of both Holydivers and Rebel Yells and neither sound like an JB I've ever owned or used. Both are also scatterwound, as are all BKPs as far as I'm aware.

My guitar tech, Kenny Marshall (worked for Zion guitars, made custom guitars for Ty Tabor) said that Duncan ran out of/couldn't afford to use the original wire that they used to wind the 70's/early 80's SH4's. Kenny is a walking encyclopedia of guitar gear and history (people mail their guitars from all over to be repaired by him), so I believe him.

Similarly, I've heard Digitech had to make the horrible Whammy II because the supplier of a certain component for the original Whammy went out of business.

that's not quite what I was saying. a pickup being an answer to the JB doesn't mean that it is a JB, and many smaller companies have a version of something that's made with the JB in mind. you can review the thread to see that the scatterwound comment is a reference to something previously posted about the JB and has nothing to do with indicating one BKP is scatterwound and another is not.

Luke Duke will refer to himself in the third person in his Sean Connery voice....for the rest of the evening.

Luke Duke believes that the huge OEM use of the production JB has somewhat dulled its shine and that SD should consider meeting with all the OEM guys and seeing which of the 4 iterations works best for each application. For example Luke Duke believes that a builder such as Wayne Guitars trying to replicate those well known 80s tones would be best off using a 35th anniversary model and that a company such as Schecter using the JB for its familiarity as well as its tone is best off sticking with the production model.

Luke Duke holds these truths to be self-evident.

Re: All JBs are NOT created equal, Why Has SD Insisted They Are? <Old JB Photos>

As DarthPhineas said, there are plenty of pickups designed with the JB as inspiration, but there is no other pickup exactly like the JB.

Ignore the "scatterwound" comment, it was out of place. NO "JB" models (outside of Custom Shop special orders) are scatterwound and NO pickup that IS scatterwound will ever sound exactly like the real "JB".

Luke Duke is hitting on the same thing I mentioned earlier in this thread... If you want to recreate the sound of a JB that's been used and abused for 30+ years, get the Antiquity. If you want to experience what a brand new JB sounded like 30+ years ago, get the 35th. If you want to capture the sound of every JB made in the past 20 years, get the regular production model. If you are inclined to whine about the minute differences between these off-the-shelf models and a true "vintage" model from the late-'70s/early-'80s, buy used and quit complaining that the "new" stuff doesn't sound the same.

After ZMB did his comparison, the only one I remember really sounding SIGNIFICANTLY different was the Antiquity. I actually liked it. I don't like the regular JB or the 35th.

You people suck.

Now I will spend the next 25 years collecting APH1s to see what changed over the years

Jerks.

Wasn't there a big thread about APH1s through the ages? Can I buy that collection?

This thread is about age :)

Re: All JBs are NOT created equal, Why Has SD Insisted They Are? <Old JB Photos>

Speaking of age...

Isn't part of the original observation that if the JB has been the same for all this time, then why have an anniversary model that sounds different from the production model? And why have an antiquity model that's different from the production model?

So...does the same apply to the APH1s? Are they they same over all the years? Should there be an anniversary model and an antiquity model of that one as well? And if so, will they also be different from the production model?

Ok...I'm going out on a limb here and say that Seymour Duncan should embrace the primitive designs with their flaws like we've done with vintage strat/tele/PAF/P90 pups. I believe SD should establish a "1975 Line". You can get the original pups made with the original materials, the original way. So, butyrate, rough cast magnets, long legs standard, threaded baseplates, and original color magnet wires. The line would consist of the JB, Jazz, 59, Distortion, and Alnico 2 Pro (since it's just an A2 Jazz and is pretty old though not JB/Jazz or 59 old. Finally wind them all on the Leesona.

Sell the pups at the same pricepoint as the Seths since they use the same materials.

Make money....

Seems so easy to me.
