All JBs are NOT created equal, Why Has SD Insisted They Are? <Old JB Photos>

Re: All JBs are NOT created equal, Why Has SD Insisted They Are? <Old JB Photos>

As long as leg length is optional, I think that's a solid idea. And that just from experience with having to account for some guitars that done have enough clearance for the long legs.

But I like the idea of the butyrate bobbins and rough cast magnets. Since they can get the wire dyed with what prefer color they want, that should be a nice touch for appearances. I wonder is the Leesona might have a bit of hype to it and I wonder if there might not be as many pickups made on it as people think, but it does have a factor of authenticity that people would like at that price point.

A short leg option would be fine, but still...threaded baseplate. I had to change mine on my old JB to mount it in my strat so I know exactly what you mean.
The wire color is just a thing about revisiting the past. The Proto-JB had a red wire instead of copper from some of the pics I've seen.

The leesona is what it is....a great marketing tool, but also a strange piece of machinery. I will say this....the pups wound on it do not seem to get spider veins, or if they do they don't get them as fast.

No spider veins? Then maybe more should be wound on that machine. haha! If it affects functionality or not, the garden variety player/custom sees a new pickup with cracks in the bobbins from pole to pole and I'm thinking they have concerns about QC.

If you scatter-wound it, it would no longer be a JB. The properties of the pickup would change too much.

that's not accurate. I have a scatterwound JB.

I've put it up against a few 80s JBJs that are still in the guitars the originally came in, as this one has a RCA5 and it seemed the most logical comparison. just a smidge more open. and a smidge more defined in the lows. it has a bit of the mechanical noise that has been referred to in the Antiquity model, and it's not afraid to go microphonic (in a good way)... as the way it's potted due to the butyrate bobbins.

there's no denying it's a JB.

You already quoted my post on page 5 with a conflicting response.

Once again. Don't limit your thinking.

It's as much as JB as the antiquity is a JB. And the anniversary is a JB. And the concept JB is a JB.

Ok...I'm going out on a limb here and say that Seymour Duncan should embrace the primitive designs with their flaws like we've done with vintage strat/tele/PAF/P90 pups. I believe SD should establish a "1975 Line". You can get the original pups made with the original materials, the original way. So, butyrate, rough cast magnets, long legs standard, threaded baseplates, and original color magnet wires. The line would consist of the JB, Jazz, 59, Distortion, and Alnico 2 Pro (since it's just an A2 Jazz and is pretty old though not JB/Jazz or 59 old. Finally wind them all on the Leesona.

Sell the pups at the same pricepoint as the Seths since they use the same materials.

Make money....

Seems so easy to me.

I like this idea!

FWIW, I bet the long legs change sound.

Well, of course they do! The notes hold out....longer.

:D

I like this idea!

I'm telling you! Easy money for SD, and they can put their skeletons in their closet to rest.

why aren't there discussions like this about the Jazz neck model?

Sure should be !!!

JB, Jazz, 59, etc...

All those early SD models changed over the years.
