All mahogany LP style axes

What do you think about all mahogany carved top LP style axes, like the '57 LP copies? Are they too dark and tubby? What pups do you like with them, and what styles are you playing?

Re: All mahogany LP style axes

Do you mean the 57' LP Custom? The 57' Goldtop is a mahogany body with a maple cap... to my knowledge all carved top Les Pauls have a maple cap. The Customs are traditionally all Mahogany.

However, I don't find the LP Custom in all Mahogany to be dark or tubby at all. It's paired with an Ebony fretboard to help with high end, and IMO it's one of the sweetest sounds in rock and blues. Ace Frehely, Peter Frampton and John Sykes just to name a few greats are synonomus with the LP custom, and their tone is anything but tubby.

Customs are know for their biting type of attack. Combine all of this with the unlimited variety of pickups available today, and you can play anything from Gospel to Country to Rock to Metal with a Custom.

Definatly one of my favorite guitars, and the next one on my list to purchase.

...I remembered one without the maple cap, was it only the '57 Custom?

Depends. The Warmoth gallery ones look sexy. I don't have one, but I'd use the Hot Rodded combo (jazz + jb) with one if I had one. I play Christian music that tries to "cover" all styles, so I need versatility.

That is correct. The 57 Custom Historic RI and the MF/GC Vintage Mahogany Studio are mahogany body with a mahogony top. My '57 RI is my favorite guitar. The ebony board is a perfect match for it. It'weighs 10 pounds though. I can't speak for the MF/GC Vintage Mahogany Studios...never played or heard one but unlike the Historics, their bodies are weight relieved.

Re: All mahogany LP style axes

The best guitar I own is a 57 LP Custom Black Beauty with a solid mahogany body. Compared to my maple/mahogany Stds, it has a little less snap on the high end, and the mids are nice and dense. The low end is just a tiny bit looser too, but in a good way.

For that reason, I think all mahogany LP's sound best with bright articulate Alnico 5 pickups. I use C-5/59n/59n on mine, but other combos that would be good are Custom/Jazz B in neck. 59 set. 59/Jazz n. Pearly Gates would be the only A2 set I'd use in solid mahogany.

I actually like the Faded mahogany studios. They come with the Burstbucker Pro's. A lot of people say that the BB Pros are thin/bright sounding, so I guess they balance well with the mahogany/ rosewood construction.

Re: All mahogany LP style axes

i know you only are interested in LP's but.
I have a one peice Honduras Mahogany strat with maple neck and it isnt tubby sounding at all. Thick and articulate is a good explanation.
It is really a beautifull peice of Mahogany. Has nice sparkly pigment in it that i here ONLY honduras mahogany has.
Got that sucker form USACG!

Re: All mahogany LP style axes

I had an all mahogany ( no cap ) Gibson Les Paul; that was very nice. I've only seen one other like it. I have an all mahogany Gibson Les Paul Special ( flat top ) that is pretty awesome after mods.
