All Praise to the Cool Rails Neck

 I love this pup. So much. I have it in the neck of my LTD EC-300 instead of a full-sized humbucker (another project kinda fell apart and I had it left over...)

I love this pickup so much. Great rhythm tones and lead as well. Combined with the Alnico 2 Pro HB in the bridge, I add just a little sizzle and bite when I switch. These two complement one another so well in my guitar. The neck tone just feels so right and fluid...

Who's with me?!

Re: All Praise to the Cool Rails Neck

I like it in the neick and middle, but wired permanently to parallel. Great strat tones with no noise. :)

I'm not sure how they compare to the Vintage Rails, but I like them in that configuration.

Sweet! I'm glad you are happy with it.
That's one of the few pickups I have not tried. Thanks for the review. I'll have to check it out :D

Re: All Praise to the Cool Rails Neck

What kind of music are you playing with it? I'm looking at throwing one in the middle position.

Re: All Praise to the Cool Rails Neck

So is the idea that the cool rails has a humbucker sound for strat, or is it an overwound single coil sound?

Re: All Praise to the Cool Rails Neck

I wana get a coolrails neck, im just not decided on the humbucker in the bridge for it.

Your suggestion might help me greatly, i would have never looked at that pup, dling sound clips right now, thanks.

Re: All Praise to the Cool Rails Neck

I'm getting to put it through its paces with my school pep band/jazz ensemble this year. I used it on a standard ballad ("Love is Here to Stay") with the tone knob rolled back, clean and dirty blues numbers, funk chording (if I want something different from the middle position) to some kicking rock a la Zeppelin, Chicago, Sabbath, pretty much the entire gamut up to the heaviest of heavies. If I start screwing with some Slayer for kicks it has to be in the middle and/or bridge position for the extra bite.

I actually have it on in some capacity about 85% of the time, either neck only or neck and bridge. The bridge I use alone when I need extra attack and bite.

One thing I really like about the Cool Rails in the neck is how responsive it is to my playing. The EQ seems to be quite stable to my ears, no extreme bass or icepick highs. So playing with a pick sounds like a pick, fingers sound like fingers, and it's very evenly defined across the board. Everything about it just feels so smooth and responsive.

I'm so happy with this, especially with the A2 Pro in the bridge position. Like I said before, I mainly play from the neck or middle position. My middle position sounds a bit dominated by the neck (fine with me) but with a little extra bite or snap added by the bridge. Mind you this is in a mahogany bodied guitar with rosewood neck! I was initially worried the sound would be too warm since both pups were based around an A2 magnet, but the sound is just right, everything I was looking for. Sadly I got lucky and got it right the first time!

I can't speak much on other pups to complement it in the bridge, but my A2Pro in the bridge works great. The bass feels firm yet bouncy at the same time (as if that makes sense?!) and the mids are definitely there in a good way. The highs are never shrill. The real treat on this guitar for me is the mid setting. Really just by adjusting my picking I can go from rhythm to lead, it's a great setting that doesn't sound like a compromise!

I'll see what I can do about putting some clips up. Right now I'm putting the guitar back together and my schedule doesn't allow for a whole lot of recording...

It's definitely not a single coil pup. My limited experience has shown that a good deal of neck humbuckers tend to be too bassy for my tastes, which is part of why I decided a single coil-sized humbucker might be a good choice.

This is certainly a humbucker pickup. The snap and sting of a single coil just isn't there (compared to other SC's I've played) but it still sounds amazing and very musical in a variety of settings.

*EDIT*

So far as basswood goes, I've never played it extensively enough because the few basswood guitars I've played weren't really my thing and had cheap hardware that really bothered me.

I'm really not the guy to ask about a reference to basswood, as my only basswood guitar is a Franken-(fake)Tele that is more of a stunt guitar. It's been burned and had some wicked hardware installed and a Fernandes sustainer system. The neck feels good and I don't think the body impacts the Sustainer system very much so it was a good cheap candidate.
