All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

I have played a few, but don't currently own one. They feel great- nice and warm sounding. The only problem is that if the body is lightweight, the guitar will tend to be neck-heavy. Rosewood is pretty dense.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

Goncalo Alves, Korina, and more commonly Mahogany shaft/ Rosewood fretboard will get you in the same ballpark as Rosewood. I have a high grade Rosewood neck, mated to a brighter fretboard ( either Ebony or Ziricote works well here, and I prfer it to all Rosewood for a warm, but more balanced tone I think), and its a nice feeling and sounding neck, one of my very best ,but real costly.

Heres a less expensive all rosewood neck. It's got no neck screwholes drilled and probably the Rosewood is of average quality- my Warmoth Indian Rosewood neck is deep dark Chocolate color with beautiful straight tight grain and probably would cost close to 400 bucks or more from Warmoth now). This $199.00 neck is on the link below... it's got 6105 frets which I could never get into.;

One of the best things I've ever had during my guitar playing/building. It feels nice. The slickness of a rosewood neck has to be felt to be fully appreciated. And sounds great too. Deep and clear low with brilliant high. I had it attached to different bodies (wood) and the resonance qualities stay. It dictates. I don't have issue Mincer mentioned. Mine is lightweight.

I played an all rosewood neck PRS McCarty once. It took a few weeks before I could bring myself to pick up any of my guitars afterward.

My Music Man LIII has a rosewood neck and I like it, even though it’s a little on the small side. It’s very smooth and seems to add a depth to the tone that didn’t seem to be there on the maple neck version I a/b’d against when I bought it.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

My PRS ME has a rosewood neck and it’s simply the best feeling and best playing neck of any guitar I’ve owned and played. It’s super tough too, I somehow managed to let the guitar slip over and it fell hard against the edge of an aluminium flight case and there was absolutely no damage. No issues with being neck heavy either, it balances perfectly.

I'm generally not a PRS fan, but I'd love to have a McCarty with a rosewood neck.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

I have one on an EBMM, an Albert Lee HH. Feels fantastic especially with the gun oil/wax finish. Sounds great too. Unfortunately it's very small, really too narrow for me. But I like the guitar too much to let it go. I wish they made a version with a fat neck; it's be absolutely killer.

Oh, an Albert Lee HH with a rosewood neck- yeah, those are amazing. Funny, the necks are about perfect size for me.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

I’ve liked all of the ones I’ve played, decided to pull the trigger on one for a Strat build.

I love the feel, very smooth.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

Then why aren't they more popular? Once I tried cutting some rosewood dowels for some fix I never did.... Smells awful if burnt, but looks good! I was always curious about all rosewood neck and why not body?

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

Confession: I don’t like the way rosewood headstocks look. :dunno:

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

Weight.

Bill

Yeah. Back in the 70s I almost bought an all-rosewood Tele from Walter Becker, but the thing was just too massive for me- heavier than the Les Paul Custom I had at the time, which was no featherweight itself. Don't think I ever weighed it but I'd guess ten pounds. And that Tele was heavier.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

Ya see, the thing is , when you get a 6 -7 piece Mexican body slathered with 5 tons of Poly finish, and a inexpeniive Rosewood neck, you are doing it for the feel alone, there won't be any tonal difference at that level.

Re: All Rosewood Necks - Thoughts?

The weight generally throws off the balance in many guitars. It is also expensive, and nice rosewoods are even more expensive. Now there are rules against the export of rosewoods, too. I am sure there are other woods out there that are equally beautiful/sound great, but many guitarists (and builders) are slow to adapt to new things.

+1 was going to add that it's also rather expensive as far as neck woods go, but you beat me to it.
