Re: Alnico 2 for Les Paul

if u play metal and early ozzy u might need something more than an A2 mag. maybe a ceramic. But to answer your question about the A2 pup with more than 9K and by the sound of music u play, I would say the custom custom. If you need something more, there is the Custom 5 (samething with an A5 mag) or the Custom (same thing with a ceramic mag). Or try the duncan distortion

Re: Alnico 2 for Les Paul

If you have one laying around, try the 498T with an A2 mag in it. It may be exactly what you want if you're after more output with the Gibson sound and A2 softness.

I did that to my old LP Custom, it turned the 498 into a USEABLE pickup, I was amazed! By the same token the alnico 5 mag from the 498 made the 57 more articulate and slightly less grainy sounding.

To the OP, the CC isn't "tight" sounding because, IMO, it isn't very compressed. It's more compressed than PAFs, but notthing like the Custom, or even C5, to my ears.

I might be a little strange wanting the alnico 2 magnet :)
I have the Seymour Duncan Hotrails in my stratocaster and they´re good they did what i wanted 4years being loud as hell, but i´ve grown away from the ceramic magnets...
i think they need alot time spent on settings and they don´t give that special feel...
The Burstbucker Pro i have in the brigde is great but it lacks output and Alnico 2 magnet is suppoused to be a player magnet meaning that i will hear alot better how i play so i really wan´t to give the alnico 2 a try...
I really feel i can do about anything with it...

If i get a chance i´ll swap the magnet in the 498T to a Alnico 2:)

Re: Alnico 2 for Les Paul

About Randy Rhoads pickups i´ll list the guitars and pickups for you;

1. 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom T-Tops pickups Alnico 5 magnets
2. Karl Sandoval V Brigde; DiMario Superdistortion ceramic magnet neck DiMarzio PAF don´t know which magnet maybe Alnico 5
3. Jackon RR Brigde; Seymour Duncan SH-6 Distortion ceramic magnet, neck; Seymour Duncan SH-2 Jazz Alnico 5 magnet...

Ok i´m gonna look on magnet swapping
T-Tops does sound right for a
74'. I guess Gibson was BSing me about the 57's or they just didn't know.

What Gibson problably ment was that today the 57classics are the closest to a T-Top since they don´t make them any longer.
It´s said that the 57classic which has the alnico 2 magnet has some of alnico 5 charasterics.

I´m not sure but that´s my guess
