Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

Just wondering as they seem to get great reviews all over.

Did anyone that tried *not* like em? And if yes, why?
I'm considering buying a pair - and read all the GREAT reviews.

So, let's have a few *good, but...*-reviews ;)

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

I have the regular A2P's and like them a lot, to me they're much better than PG's. The diference with the Slash A2P's is that they're wound hotter than the regular ones. That'll make them a little warmer. In the case of the bridge PU, that could be a good thing. For me, it's not in the neck slot. I want all the treble and clarity I can get there. Depends on what you want. I certainly don't think you'd be disappointed in a Slash set, but you may like the regular A2P neck better.

I've got them in the Epiphone slash Les Paul. Fairly chunky, decent pups. I'm a fan of high output pickups though so these didn't really do it for me. I will give them another go sometime though, could pop a clip up maybe thats useful.

True, they're definitely not high output. They have a PAF-type wind and low output magnets. A2 magnets have a lot of midrange, not much treble, a loose low-end, and a lot of rich texture. That's great for some applications, but not for others. If you want more of a vintage rock and blues sound, Slash A2P's are very good. If you want a more modern metal sound, there are better choices.

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

These do not sound like overwound normal a2 pros. They just sound bigger and wider, and hotter, without added midrange. They are super clear and articulate like a single coil, the neck included..they are not thick pickups unless you like to wind pickups up super close to your strings. They lack something fundamental in the tone that all of Seymours pups do, and I went back to my Gibsons. Great singing lead tone on the bridge, and awesome gigantic strat meets p90 like neck tone under gain, but something is missing for me when it comes to chords..I cannot pinpoint it..All I know it it bugs me, and they came out of my Epi335 and my Gibson. But the Slash set is awesome if you go in realizing it is not a PAF type..it is closer to a T top or late Patent#. If you are expecting PAF you will be disappointed.

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

i tried a set in a les paul the other day. i was surprised because i really liked the bridge pu but did not like the neck, which was the exact opposite of what i thought i'd like. the bridge was warm and crunchy and really sounded nice. the neck was muddy and lacked the sweetness and clarity of, well, slash!

Actually that sounds like slash neck pup to me (muddy). His tone is not that articulate but more slurred like a southern drawl if that makes any sense when it comes to the neck.

different strokes for different folks i guess. i love slash's neck pu sound on AFD/Illusion, and the one i tried just did not capture what i liked about that tone at all. must need slashs hands and amp as well!

Well remember their's more to his tone then just the pups. I think his marshall was modded to hell for that record.

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

I liked the A2P in the neck when I had it, and I'm growing tired of the '59/Custom combo I currently use. I'm thinking of putting the A2P back in the neck and going with a Slash bridge to get that position back down to lower output levels than the Custom.

Sorry I have NO useful info to contribute here, more messing with the idea of a slightly hot bridge and thinking that the Slash might cover it.

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

After all these years, i ma still in love with my regular A2P set in my SG.

Like Bluesman said, the Slash set is just a little bit hotter wound.
I would have loved to try/buy them, but my next Duncan set is the Whole Lotta set.

After thought; ... i would love to hear the 'middle-pos' on a Les Paul with a JB(b) / A2P Slash(n)

Very well said !!!

+1. I'm very pleased with my regular A2P's and have no burning desire to try the hotter Slash version, especially not the neck one. It's wound to about 8K, and to me, that's too hot for a neck HB with an A2, especially in an LP which makes PU's sound warmer. Clarity and treble are reduced where I don't want them to be. The regular neck A2P is 7.6K, which makes it much more usable in warm guitars (the resonant peak of the Slash neck is about 10% lower).

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

AII's in general IMHO are the warmest sound HB I've heard(aside from a real PAF). I have the Slash pickups in my Les Paul standard & it made me fall in love with my Les Paul all over again. Great pickups, buy them, install them, play them. You won't be disappointed...

Re: Alnico 2 Pro Slash pickups - did anyone try them and *NOT* like them?

They didn't do it for me. Had them in my LP for about a day. They were too smooth and not PAF enough for me. I think the midrange being too bubbly and the lack of sizzle and PAF style punch were what I missed. They're punchy but not in the way any of my other PAFs are.

Which Duncan nails that classic PAF tone ? (...to your ears !)

Antiquities, Bonamassa's & 59's so far. I have Seth's and PG sitting in my room to throw in soon. I'm addicted. I LOVE the Dimarzio 36th as well and Burstbuckers do it really well too.

Many talk about the undefined bass response. It's very vintage and doesn't hang with modern rock as well as non-aged buckers like the 59's and Dimarzio's and probably the PG/WLH sets.
