he guys ive had loads of pickups before but ive never tried some alnico 2 pickups in my strat . im thinking of the alnico pros . ive read the difference between the 2 and 5 but read conflicting things tbh. supposedly the 5 has more bass and mids but when i listen to sound clips i think the alnico 2s sound warmer. would be interested to hear just some opinions and experience of guys who have them? will be putting them in my usa strat rw neck and through a hot rod deluxe

Re: alnico 2 single coil advice

I've used Seymour Duncan A2 Pro Set and they were very warm. I had them in a custom Semi-Hollow Strat and they were too dark and muddy (ended up swapping them out for a set of Fat 50s and loved it.)

It sounds like you are looking to compare the APS-1 to the SSL-1? My impressions are that the SSL-1 has bigger bass and crisper treble, it's a classic Strat pickup. The APS-1 has less bass, a rounder treble and different mids. I don't want to say "more", but it's a thicker, chewier midrange. The SSL-1 is spanky, the APS-1 is smoky. It's a really cool alternative Strat tone if you already have a classic Strat or if you are looking for a little less bite.

I use a combo right now, APS-1 in the neck and SSL-1 in the middle. Each position is unique and the combo position is very complex.

comparing the aps1 to the ssl1, the ssl1 has a bigger tighter bottom and brighter sharper top end. it sounds like a classic fender type pup wound on the hot side from the early/mid 60's. the aps1 is warmer and softer on the high end but still sounds vintagey. the 5/2 combines some of the qualities of both. i have or have had all three and they all sound great, which is best depends on your guitar and rig

I dig the Alnicos and Five Twos a little more than the SSLs, but I like those lower mids. The Five Twos are really a great balance of the 2 types. I always loved the low end of the SSLs. It is the highs that turn me away.
