Alnico II humbucker in Strat?

Re: Alnico II humbucker in Strat?

I installed a APH-1n and APH1b in a customers strat a few months ago. Tell you what, I was really surprised how good it sounded. Alder body, Rosewood Neck MIM Standard Strat was the platform. I was a little worried it would sound dark, but surprisingly, it had a well rounded sound, not bass heavy or boomy in any way, and was really pretty tight sounding, especially given its an A2 based pickup. I would recommend it to anyone.

Interesting. I've been thinking of putting a full humbucker into my strat (got a JB Jr. in it now). I have a Les Paul with Seth Lovers, and I want to try a humbucker with vintage output into my strat. I loved the way the les paul sounded even with a good amount of gain. The vintage output pickups tended to breathe and sound more musical to my ear. (The JB Jr, is a good pickup though don't get me wrong.)

I was hoping someone would say that the Alnico II magnet would sort of round out the overall brightness of a strat, cause thats what I was going for.

Thanks for the info

Also, do you think this would be a good idea if I was also going for versatility? I mean I'm sure putting the Alnico II Pro would obviously be able to handle classic rock type tones, but could it handle slightly more aggressive music?

IMHO, the APH covers alot of ground. It's then down to the type of amp your using.

Marshall Jubilee

On paper, I thought it would make sense that the AII Pro would help round out the bridge position of a strat, but of course you can't know for sure until you actually here it. So Its good to know that somebody has had a good experience with these in a strat.

Do the AIIpros sustain well in a strat type guitar?

I very much doubt that Alnico II Pro would cover anything more aggressive than classic rock (without sounding artificial), not to forget it also wouldn't round out the tone of a Strat. Otherwise we'd see a lot of hard rock players putting it in the bridge position but we really don't,do we? It's mostly preferred for the neck position to handle softer tones not the aggressive part.
So I believe it would be wiser to consider a Custom Custom for a wider palette..

What about the feedback with this??? I'm asking everyone about that issue because of unpotted coils, cause I think the Seth lover is the greatest pickup, to me, the sound is perfect but I wouldn't like to have problems with that...

i had a set of pearly gates in a strat for a while, really loved the way it sounded. more aggressive than the aph but very controlable with the tone controls

Re: Alnico II humbucker in Strat?

I use a CustomCustom, hotter alnico 2 pickup in my Strat. It sounds good but it kind of lacks bass in my opinion. It's a great contrast to the vintage single coils i've got in there tho...they're all clean, with heavy bass and lots of twangy treble, then switching to the CustomCustom cranks up the output and the mids for a nice heavy break down.

But even at 14k it kind of lacks for really heavy tones. I think if it had the same amount of mids but more bass it would be perfect for the heavy but as it is, it's really tight and crunchy and mostly juts adds some mids to my trebly Strat sound.

It works for me but I dunno how it would work for everybody....:smokin:
