Alnico III vs IV?

Re: Alnico III vs IV?

The differences are subtle to say the least. I think that when such differences are magnified by amplification, that is where they stand out.

That's true, added gain will jack up the harmonics and should make them easier to tell apart in audible terms. But on a computer, you can just zoom in, so it's less useful.

Thats one of the severe limitations of a test like that. Its very possible that in a test like that you found zero difference. It could very well be that until you play harder or softer or you attack the strings in a certain way that the differences dont stand out.

The best you can glean from this is "when strummed like this they sound like this" Its too narrow to be representative of what they might do in a guitar.

Actually that's not possible. The magnets are physically different, so they absolutely effect the system in some way. The question is how, by how much, and secondarily to that point, can it be heard.

What's the basis for this supposition? You say this is a "severe" limitation, so this had better be pretty good.

An new and shiny open D string produces a wide range of harmonic content, there's nothing narrow about it. If you can't see a difference in the harmonic content of a "D", there's no reason you would see a difference in an open "G". The Q factor of a guitar pickup is not so sharp that it will favor the harmonic content of a specific note.

It will be fun to see what tests you come up with.

Download and open the "Cast Alnico Permanent Magnet Catalog".

The spec you need to look at is the "Coersive Force Hc" in pag. 3, expressed in Oersteds. The higher the value, the stronger it is.

A2: 560 Oe - A3: 475 Oe - A4: 720 Oe.

That's the specific answer to your specific question.

HTH,

Wait, now I'm thoroughly confused.

Ignoring the data sheets and what you just said, what is the order of A2, A3, A4, A5 and A8 from weakest-pull to strongest. Once and for all I want to see this put to rest. And I won't be satisfied until I hear from you, LtKojak.

From weakest to strongest: A3, A2, UOA5, A4, A5, A8, A9.
