Alnico IV/59?

Re: Alnico IV/59?

Whassup everybody!
Anybody try slapping an A IV in a 59 neck?
Results? Thanks.

Most every regular member on this forum has, I reckon. It fills in the mids a bit while cutting back on boominess in the neck position, and it makes for a mighty fine pickup, especially with a A4 Custom in the bridge. But like most A4 pickups, while some people may see it as tonally transparent and balanced, other people view it as bland, but I suspect bland amps are to blame for that.

It definitely "rawx", as the kids say.

Re: Alnico IV/59?

Yes, I have. I tried that pickup in the bridge and neck spots of a Dean Z. Results: better than stock, to my tastes, anyhow. More balanced e.q., not as "blocky" sounding, and hits the amp a little less hard. But still is in the same general neighborhood as A5. I view A4 as Diet A5. If you really want to significantly tame the output and stiffness of A5, try A3 as opposed to A4.

Re: Alnico IV/59?

You may also try to search for Custom 8 since it's been the most popular combo around here for quite some time :)

Re: Alnico IV/59?

An A4 59 neck with an A2 JB in the bridge has got to be the king of modded pickup sets. In fact, if I do rightly recollect, the Eclair set is a slightly rewound version if this set.

Actually, they're based on the "Hot Rodded" set. The Ecllair neck is a slighly underwound, A4-modded Jazz neck, and the Eclair bridge is a slighly underwound, A2-modded JB.

Allegedly, it's the set that Seymour actually uses in his Tele-Gib.

Roughcast A3 in the 59n works better than A4 in my Les Paul. It's got a little more character in the high end and provides a bit of sweetness to contrast the raunchiness a bridge Les Paul pickup should have.

59/A4 set in my LP Studio is like a slightly hotter thicker but more even A2P set, and that is a good thing to me. I used polished in the neck and rough in the bridge.
