my guitar requires one volume and one tone.

i have Alpha A and B pots. i have two of each.

which should i use ? :

(2) A's ?

(2) B's ?

(1) A and (1) B ? if so, which in which position ?

Alpha pots coding is:
A=Audio taper aka Logarythmic taper
B=Linear taper

I use Linear as Volume and Audio as Tone.

HTH,

HTH,

I second this!

The best use of Alpha pots to my ears is B fro volume and A for tone.

Third!

Agreed, Kojak knows his stuff!

Tried and tested - to my ears, Linear (B) for volume 'cleans' up well, giving a more useable range (unlesss you have
a desire for volume swells)

Re: Alpha Pots: A or B for Volume / Tone ?

Isn't it traditionally the other way around, Log for volume, linear for tone?

I've got [linear] tone pots that seem to do nothing until the very last notch, so to speak, so wondering if I've got that idea round the wrong way :15:

i think this depends on how you are used to;

personally i favor A's for both volume and tone

No.

That's a less-than-ideal taper. I've found this kind of taper mostly in 25K minipots used by active EMG in the early '80s.

No.

HTH,

I'd understood Log for volume had to do with how human hearing perceives the change in sound level, hence always going the log = volume, lin = tone route.

So more a case of being unfortunate with those particular tapers, rather than its type? Looks like I'm about to put in an order for some pots :15:

Re: Alpha Pots: A or B for Volume / Tone ?

I was always told that audio taper is best for volume. And my experience has shown me it depends on how you get your dirt as much as anything else. When I use pedals I prefer audio taper. When I'm cranking the amp I prefer linear. It really comes down to preference

Re: Alpha Pots: A or B for Volume / Tone ?

I prefer log for volume and lin for tone. Since you have both, try them both in different combos and see which you prefer .

Edit: this video (and his others) has great info

HTH,
Yeah. One more here.
I find it that with a log (A) volume pot, the volume is quite useless for most of the range (3-10) and all at once suddenly (1-2).
