Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

and i bet youll love it. it should sound similar to my old 10k ant which rules!!!

i wound a tapped tele/broadcaster type bridge pup 6.6k tapped/11.2 full alnico II. im building a reverse slant esquire that i cant wait to finish. i think i might have to pop it in my tele just to see how bad i screwed it up :)

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I wound something very simple:
APS-2 strat bridge @ 9.7K

I haven't decided what it's going in yet, but I plan to use it

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I've got an 9.2k Antiquity PAF Bridge, Alnico 2, double cream with nickel cover, unpotted. Can't wait to get it fully installed. Went to put it in, got the pup mounted and went to solder everthing up and I couldn't find my freaking spool of solder!!! So it's still sitting on the bench until I find the spool or get a new one tomorrow. Will post results later.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I keep wondering if mine is going to work... haha! Hell, I dropped it to the floor during the construction process! If jeremy's works, I'm going to be very happy for him...

:laugh2: can't wait till I get a new one. The duct tape is going nowhere near my pickup.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

what on earth is the duct tape doing there lol...holding the pickup up or something? if you need a new pickup ring or some screws i may have some extras you can have if that would fix the problem.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

there were a lot of overwound stuff showing up. I'm pretty sure I was the only one that wound a P90. Isn't that bizarre!

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

wow the only p90 out of how many people??...wow that is a bit odd...now lets hope the only UGD p90 works hehe!!

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

As soon as I came home from UGD, I went into my music room and listened to my LP Goldtop with the regular Custom 5 nickel, then proceeded to pull it out.

My UGD pickup was a regular nickel Custom 5 that was overwound right in between a C-5 and JB, so it would still sound like a C-5, but have a tad more mids. It's 15.3

Personally, I think it's the best sounding A5 humbucker I've heard, especially for gain.
The difference between it and the stock one is that it's a little richer in the mids, and the top end compresses just slightly......kinda like a JB or CC. But, it still has the tight low end and natural sound that the C5 has......it just pushes the amp a touch more.

Today, I jammed with a new band I might be joining and heard my Bogner fully cranked on all three channels through the 4-12. One LP had the 50th Ann Seths and it sounded like straight up PAF tone city! No microphonics either, even when used at crushing highgain settings superloud. Then, I plugged in my other Les Paul with my new overwound C-5/59 nickel. Absolutely stellar tone! Warm, hotrodded, tight, and smooth! I play everything from clean to plexi to super highgain, and the 15.3 Custom 5 is the tone game winner! It's more perfect sounding than the C5, CC, or JB, to my ears.

Are you going to order another one, for that black beauty?

Nah, I've already got a Gold C-5 in that one, and it's got plenty of natural mids, since it's all mahogany.

Man, too bad we can't all call up Duncan and order pickups to our specs for $70, rather than $150+ MJ would go outta her mind if they started doing that! :laugh2: It was fun to get that rare opportunity to dial in our guitars by deciding exactly what we wanted!

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

GJ's new C5 does sound really good. It has all the clarity of the C5, but the extra winds give it just enough mids to make it sound more balanced. Also, the extra winds add just enough compression, so the highs start to round off just slightly. Really a great sounding pickup. The thing is, it doesn't sound like a hot pickup. It still has that vintage flavor over all.

Nice, nice pickup.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

I can't wait to hear about all these pickups, once they're in guitars! There were a few overwound JB's, underwound dun-aged magnet JB's, overwound Antiquities, and beefed up single coils. I'm sure Evan and co. are going to be interested in hearing about some of these creations.

I've got an Alnico II Pro (b) with Antiquity baseplate and hardware, overwound (asked for 9.5, came out 9.2, not bad), double cream with a nickel cover. Sort of a cross between the EVH and a Slash Custom Shop model. I think it's going in my Les Paul standard, but we'll see.

Jeff, or should I say Jolly's roomate!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: I demand a review!!!! It sounds like a great idea.

I'd like to hear them. Lets make sure you all get some clips posted!

Sounds like it was a great time...

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

Well I got a staggered Jazz (4.4 and 4.8) wound up to about 9.3k and a potted 4-conductor Seth that came to about 8.7k (4.2 and 4.4).

I tried them in the neck of my guitar.

Jazz was okay. Combined w/ the CUstom bridge I got some icepick highs, and I would have liked a bit more bass. I've thought about selling this one up. (here Jolly Jolly......)

The Seth is amazing split! I couldn't believe it! The one pickup that doesn't come with a splitting option (without custom shop involvement) sounds more stratty in the neck of a LP than any other pups I've tried in the neck. JB, APH-1, PG, 59, Jazz, Custom...it's in the high end. Something about the highs in a Seth give it the spank and twang that none of the above provide. And then the full, thick tone distorted...amazing. I'm so in love with this one. Total keeper.

I was excited about this.... that is EXACTLY what I would have made. It would have been trem-spaced, b/c. That would have been killer in my ESP. You need to post some clips GJ. I may need to order one from the custom shop!!

Here are some of the pickups guys spec'd out (written down by MJ):

  • Hybred pickup
  • Custom Custom zebra with a silver pickup cover
  • white bobbin, humbucker with one custom coil and one distortion coil with the oversized magnet
  • JB trembucker in Zebra, with a 2% overwind and allen-head pole pieces
  • Hot JB, Black, Bridge, w/ Ceramic Magnet
