Hmmm - from learning guitar all this time, and watching interviews and lessons - I got the impression that the players do not consciously think about their picking, unless they are asked about it. They just do whatever is natural. For some economy is more natural, i guess. For me - I just try to pick everything alternate, but I throw in my middle finger, to pluck certain notes in between (they sound completely different from picked ones). But i wish i could economy pick. have to work on it.

I tend to do that as well, adds a completely different vibe to what you play..I like it
