Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

SO that leads to the question, would the standard fillister screws (like on a JB or Custom) work in a Full Shred? I am really thinking about doing this. the one thing i do not like about the Full Shred is the sort of "clank" sound you get when chugging on the low E string. I like the tightness, but i want it like a Screamin Demon sort of tightness. IF those screws do work, i wish i had a spare parts Duncan lying around to pull the parts from.

On that note, one thing i have noticed with the Screamin Demon 8 so far is that bending on the higher strings, most notably the G string, I am not getting much sustain at all. I have the pickup at a moderate height, but the notes still die out. mag still "settling in" so to say?

Yes allen or fillister have the same path of screw . If you want to reduce the clang ( which I like on low strings ) you can put a row of fillister on the bridge coil , like the Demon . For your sustain problem I doubt it comes from the magnet , especially if it occurs on one string .

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

the ceramic jazz neck is really bright tho, theres more mids response but a lot of the extra mids are like high mids, theres more presence but thank god no fizz, how bright is A8 Jazz?

The Jazz 8 has the same treebles than with A5 but much more mids so the high strings seem rounder but with plenty of upper harmonics , it sings well like a lead pickup .
A8 is known as similar to the ceramic without harsh treebles ( and a bit less tight on bass strings though ) .

thanks for the info, I think I will stick with the Ceramic Jazz then, harshness of ceramic magnets in the bridge seems to disappear in the neck, like how EMG81 in the neck doesn’t really sound that harsh, I cannot stand dark neck pickups lol

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Haha, yeah, I get it...but the new product announcements seem to be a better thing to have up at the top right now. After awhile, stickys tend to be ignored, so I like to keep em fresh.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Fair point, we just need a way to keep info threads from being buried.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Yeah, they don't get buried if we keep adding new info! Seriously, I want to avoid like 10 stickys at the top of every forum. That used to happen a lot, and I never read any of them.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

in theory thats what the vault was for

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Maybe a tech subforum or some tweaks to the vault. Since photobucket killed he internet, we have to rebuild with attached pics

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

the vault doesn't allow posting. its locked away for posterity

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

How you (and other mods) feel about a tech forum? How to, diagrams and so on? Trying to put all that in one thread ends up as a 600 post mess with broken links.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Well, mods can add info...but it is one of the least read forums on here.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

This thread needs a bump, and I have a question regarding spacers because I never really looked into them as deeply as I've done with magnet swaps.

Here's a few preliminary and generic questions I have so far:

-How many different types of spacers are there?

-From what little I've read so far they generally seem to be accepted as a way to fine tune the magnet swap, so how much of a difference do they make?

-Can someone post an example of how the spacers would accentuate a magnet swap or their experiences with mixing and matching different types of magnets and spacers?

Thanks
