Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

Tell me about the tone-

I need a 2 channel, but assume that this is 1/2 of the 2 ch version.

I had posted the Carl Martin PlexiTone which I love but I forgot you wanted a 2 channel pedal. It wouldn’t let me completely delete the post.

No worries! I appreciate input and everything is a learning experience-

Much peace,

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

Resurrecting this tread, because I haven't been able to play enough of the pedals you have suggested-

But I did follow up with Wampler and asked about custom-
They said they don't do them but suggested the following-

I would suggest our Dual Fusion unit which is 2 units in one: https://www.wamplerpedals.com/tom-quayle-dual-fusion

Also, I have the Paisley deluxe which incorporates the Paisley unit and has the older “Underdog” circuit replicating the old Nobels OD, also 2 units in one: https://www.wamplerpedals.com/paisley-drive-deluxe

Both units you can separate volumes for the versatility you’re looking for.

Has anyone played either of them and do either have the Plexi drive sound?

Reminder, I'm looking for:

A single pedal that has 2 sounds with independent gains and vol
1. Slightly overdriven SRVish tone

2. Full-blown singing distortion, ie Cliffs of Doverish

Wampler's Plexi drive is the tone I'm after-

Thanks again and love this forum!

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

why does it have to be one pedal? I think just about any good boost in front of your Wampler Plexi drive would give you exactly what you want?

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

Thanks for 2 pedal idea, but have done away with pedal board, and cant cary a lot of independent fx...

Want as short a chain as possible to avoid signal loss and get the chimey goodness out of my amp.

And these 2 gains are not in series... It will be od or crunch not both...

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

I can relate to all those concerns, but a boost into an overdrive often yields crunch. Just a thought.

You might also consider contacting "FrankTheAnvilFX" on Etsy. He will custom build just about anything and he will do it for a VERY reasonable price. I did not have him build any double pedals, but he did three singles for me that I love, all three for less than the cost of one boutique pedal, and each one was in my hands within 2 weeks of my order. I love love love the Guv'nor clone he built me. It's all hand-wired, true bypass, etc..
He could probably do exactly what you asked for in your first post. Tell him I sent you. (Not that it will matter much, except the next time I ask him to build a pedal maybe he'll remember the referral!) He may be the best kept secret in pedal world.

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

I've wanted the Boss Angry Driver since it's release, even though it's the last thing I need (another gain source).
They're still fairly new so buying used isn't much cheaper than new+15% discount, but on the other hand the used ones are all still like-new, so for $150 it's not bad.

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

The Paisley Drive Deluxe does look pretty interesting. The Paisley side is a heavily tweaked Tube Screamer and the Underdog side has a lot of versatility in the wide gain range and three band EQ.

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

Maybe modify the Wampler so the boost has a volume knob or trimpot to set the volume. Wouldn't think it would be that hard, if you could find a schematic. Or maybe see if Wampler would do it. Really sounds like the pedal has the sound you want, just a little volume issue.

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

My first thought was the original big box Carl Martin Plexitone. As a different train of thought I also thought maybe the Blackstar HT or LT Dual might be a good option?

I didn’t read through this entire thread but can’t you just use Gear 1/OD1 on the Splawn?

Yeah I wish they would consider a mod, but total understand not opening that door

Re: Alternative to Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe Overdrive Pedal

That’s what I get then...lol
Love that Splawn;)... Its moved into the core of current recording rig... Clean, just south of breakup on ch1, pedal fades into warm crunch on my peavy classic, then fades back into splawn ch 2 for 2 levels of crunch....

I live off of the inbetween sounds, but at either end of that spectrum, its pure splawn!

I do have the HT Dual on my big board. Admittedly I haven't used my big board in a while, but it covers a lot of ground with a clean/crunch switch on the lower gain side plus twin volumes. It also has the ISF feature so you can get 'American' type drive tones as well as 'British' tones.
