Re: Alternatives to EMG 81
The 18 volt mod made a huge difference for me. I have a mini-toggle switch so I can A/B compare 9 and 18 volts. The 9 volt mode sounds anemic and fizzy to me. At 18 volts, the compression is greatly reduced and the pickup has a much clearer overall sound with more dynamic bass response.
If you like the 18 volt mod sound, but do not have enough room for the 2nd battery in the control cavity, the EMG 81x or the Duncan Blackout are probably the best alternatives.
If you're looking for something different (but still active) check out the EMG 57/66 set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA2b5KIpC78 I greatly prefer the sound of the 57 and 66 to the 85. Granted, I think that Andy James uses quite a bit of compression in this video.
I am kindof on the fence with what to do with my old B.C. Rich Virgin. I am torn between replacing those with the 81x/60x set or the Black Winter set. I have been having problems stuffing both batteries in the control cavity. I was sold on the 81x/60x, but the more I hear the Black Winters, the more I am considering them as a very good passive alternative with similar tonality.
If you havent tried 18 volts its way more than worth it also considering it costs 3 bucks for the batter clip and 4 dollars for another 9 volt battery. It will make a significant difference. For how cheap and easy it is it should be the first thing you try. If you decide you dont like it your out 3 bucks for the battery clip and you have a new spare battery but its rare to hear of anyone preferring 9 volts instead of 18.
