Am I crazy or just weird?

IDEA: Strat style guitar with a HARDTAIL 6-saddle Strat bridge but with a Locking nut/retainer bar setup on the headstock.

I'm thinking it'll be nice for the string-angle/tension over the nut or whatever you want to call it. Plus it could help with tuning problems without locking tuners.

Opinions?

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

Go For it. I can't imagine that it would hurt anything. I think it'd look cooler than a stock nut. Plus, I'm always for doing things that make people shake their heads and ask why.... like putting emg's in my singlecut! Go against the grain. The only problem is that you'll have to do some major cutting where the nut will set, at least as far as I know to get the locking nut to fit (as I'm sure you know they're quite a bit deeper).

Redundant. If you have a hardtail AND locking tuners and are stilll having tuning problems, there's another problem (most likely the nut). Locking it won't do anything but make it a pain in the ass to change tunings without breaking out the toolbox. Install a new nut, or use a pencil tip to "lube" it with the graphite.

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

I'd say you're just weird, that idea isn't far off... I would even go as far to say it's a good idea, and that you should do it.

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

If you have a locknut on it, how would you tune it with the strings locked? Even if the guitar is perfectly in tune then you tighten down the nut, the guitar will not be in tune anymore. The locking keys should be enough.

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

Yeah my hardtail Warmoth Strat rarely goes out of tune and it's just got a graphite nut and a little bar to bend the strings or whatever (saw it on an Ibanez and thought it looked good) and normal Gotoh tuning machines...seems like if you locked EVERYTHING down, it'd be overkill :D

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

A locking nut seems like a pain in the arse, but the string retainer bar could be do something. It seems like it would give you a more even string-to-string break over the headstock, like an angled neck.

Tune guitar -> Lock down nut -> which causes the guitar to go out of tune -> undo nut -> repeat.

This is why they have the mini-tuners on the floyd bridges.

Did not think of that... the JS2000 comes like that, with a fixed bridge but fine tuners on it. It's pretty much a springless Edge-trem plugged into the body. Here's one! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33043&item=3779975683&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

In the setup i described I wouldn't be using locking tuners... just regular ones with the locking nut. I don't intend to do this... it was purely and experimental idea...

I DID find out that the JS6 guitars by Ibanez had a regular nut but kept the retainer bar. Think this would cause any undue wear on the nut from tuning?

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

locking tuners + fixed bridge + graphite nut + graphite saddles = best tuning stability possible from a hardtail guitar.

LOL. :laugh2: you have a point. Maybe I'll bring it to User Group day,and take it for a test run.

TH=hat's what I was talking about. I always wated to do something like that to my Strat.

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

That's how I built my bro's parts-o-caster, normal tuninhg keys paired with a Wilkinson vintage style trem and a string retainer bar. ;)

The nut doesn't seem to be waering any quicker than on my strats, and I'm a big trem (ab)user when I have one. :burnout:

Re: Am I crazy or just weird?

The retainer bar is really just a way to make sure you have consistent string pressure over the nut, rather than using string trees. I thought about doing that with my Strat project, but I wanted to keep a more traditional look so I went with Graphtec string trees.

The thing I like about the retainer bar is that it's out of the way of the logo area of the headstock, it keeps the angle over the nut good and pulls the strings at a 90-degree angle to the tuners simultanesously, and looks kind of unconventional.

I think this'll be something to look into should I ever build a hardtail.
