Am I missing something when not using a volume knob?

Well, I'm going to change the whole pup config on my strat next month and thought about wireing it up with 3 tone controls and no volume because it's always on 10 anyway cause i only use the amps volume pot... Is this Idea stupid or why does it seem noone else uses that config?

I never use tone pots :laugh2: . Most people (including myself) use the volume knob to turn the guitars sound off completely when they don't want any sound coming out of the amp. It's also very useful to back off on the volume a little bit to clean up the amp on the clean channel and eliminate distortion. I cannot imagine having 3 tone knobs. One is all you really need, or none in my case.

If you start to feedback or have to deal with floresent lights your SREWED!
IMHO you don't need a tone knob as much as a Vol. (just ask EVH)

The tone knob´s effect is greater, but the volume knob can be the only thing that stands between a great show and a crappy one

you could always add a kill switch....*shrug*...isn't that hard to wire up..it's just a toggle between the jack and the output of your knobs to cut the signal when you don't want any noise

IMO a tone control is a MUST on a guitar with single coils...

All the great strat masters learned how to control their tone and volume knobs flawlessly, on my lp i dont think i even touch the things but ive been learning to fiddle around alot in live shows with my volume and tone pots.

The volume and tone on a Tele or Strat is a must have for me. I'm always using them. On a Tele, rolling the volume back a bit you can get that cool popping/snap sound without killing everyone's ears. On the bridge pup I roll the tone about mid and my neck pup is wired to bypass the tone control. On my bridge pup I can go from warm mellow to an ice pick sound.

Now, on my Les Paul I hardly ever touch them.

There's a reason Strat's have one volume and two tone knobs.....once you figure out how to use them you'll be glad you have them.

yes, 3 volumes would be a lot more practical

I've mentioned this before ... Richard Thompson has a Ferrington custom 3 pickup guitar, kind of a strat/ tele. He has a P90 neck/ strat mid/ Broadcaster bridge with 3 volumes, and controls his tone by the mix of the 3 volumes.

works for him.

my own preference is stock wiring with the mid tone jumpered for the bridge, but hey, that's why there are different wiring schemes. I found that with just one master tone, I have to adjust the tone when switching from neck to bridge position, whereas with stock wiring, I can more or less leave the two tones in one spot.

This thread comes at a good time for me, because I was thinking of wiring one of my guitars with just a KILL SWITCH instead of a volume control, since I keep my volume control dimed all the time, anyway ...

if you dont have a treble bleed on your volume, rolling back the volume control will also soften the treble of your signal. I like this effect alot with my strat, since it could be bright at times-subtle adjustments with volume and tone get me where i want.

i use my tone knob for more practical than tonal reason, ie. cutting out the sound between songs. stick with the tone knob, its handy.

I only use volume knobs, tone knobs are always untouched on my guitars. I use volume to control just how dirty I want my overdrive side of my amp to be and for the occasional volume swell.

In my RG I removed the tone knob for an on/off switch. The third position was also on, but it would flip back to off - for tipping in nice rythms

My LP has the following setup:
neck vol.
bridge vol.
bridge tone
master vol.

if I think of a good use for the bridge tone...

if you have a really good volume pedal as the first thing your guitar goes into, you can get away with no volume pot on board

i cant imagine trying to play live with a guitar that has no master volume knob
