I listened to a few clips of Robert Cray using a Hardtail and I didnt really dig his tone. PLinky. Thin.

I've blocked my strat and hated it. It killed all air and presence to the guitar. I can't imagine that the hardtail models are much better, but everyone has their own taste.

I've heard others say that. I only know his tone from YouTube videos, and they aren't a good indication. I could kick myself for not catching his show when he was here in Jax last year. :banghead:

What about this? Change the pickups to a more suitable colour and also the knob/switch/jack.

Yup. I've eyeballed that a couple times. Sweet axe. I wish they hadn't changed the control configuration, however. I like my tone control.

I love hardtail Strats, I wish they'd bring them back. Somebody should show this poll to whoever makes those decisions at Fender. 70% want them, 30% don't care. The people have spoken!

Same. A new pickguard is totally doable, but you'd be left with an empty battery cavity in the back.

Re: Am I the odd man out for wanting a hardtail Strat?

i like the strat trem even if its screwed down with 5 springs. Its because that big lump of metal in the back is an integral part of what id identify as the sound of a strat. I know they make hardtail strats but to me thats taking out a lot of what i love about them.
I love having only 2 springs and my pinky permanently attached to the trem, i love cradling the trem in my palm if im playing fingerstyle. but for many years in rock bands i had five springs and did not use it. All these are part of the tonal palette of a strat. Vive le synchronized trem!
If you really gotta have a good quality hardtail strat tho....just make a warmoth partsocaster...
