Back in 1989 when i had sold off all my amps expecting to buy bigger and better, i had spent all the money quickly and was stuck.... So for $100 i bought a little Roland practice amp.... i still have the thing sitting here behind me on the floor.. It had 2 little speakers and a hell of a lot of gain... a DS1 on roids.. Fuzzy and crapy sounding too..... But when i took the speaker wires off the speakers and soldered a 1/4 inch jack on them and plugged that into a 4x12 Bass cab it was deafening
Don't ya just love those kinds of discoveries? Little amps like that always come with inefficient speakers that make them sound crappy. My Lead 12 is one of the few little combos in it's size class that sounds good to me with it's built-in speaker. It is a 10" Celestion after all. ;)

Yup for sure... this little Roland just sounds buzzy with the stock 2 x 6 1/2 speakers.... but thru the old 70's bass cab i used to own it was insane for volume... The guy next door came into my house walked downstairs and told me to turn it down... I couldn't believe he just walked into my house like that... I was making all this noise and started to look out the window as i had this feeling i was being watched and turn around and here is this guy standing there..... strange....

LOL...Last night at practice we had someone say we're a little louder than usual. I'm like, "how, I'm using about 1/10th the power I normally use"...LOL Just goes to show that watts don't matter 100%, it's the efficiency of the speakers and cabinet being used too. Granted, the little combo may look funny sitting on top the cab but after hearing it, I could care less.

6 1/2" speakers? Those come in cars and trucks...LOL. My Crate has a 8" speaker and it too sounds good through the 4x12. I wish it had a 10" too. It would sound so much better.

Hmm.. random thought... Rebuilding your car's sound system as an amp, so jamming would be, backing your truck into your friend's garage.

You sure you're from Markham, and not Scarborough? I guess the difference in this case would be the truck in the garage vs. on the lawn.

Re: Am I the only one?

Haha, Jamming on the lawn would be fun, but my neighbors hate me enough as is.

I dont own a truck..

Re: Am I the only one?

Having owned a Marshall valvstate for 4 and a half years and loved it i would not discount SS amps (though it is a hybrid, i still see it as a ss), but i also own valve amps, when i get the chance to use my valve amps and i dont use the marshall for a while i get really used to the warm smooth and amazing tone i get, when i go back to my marshall i always get disapointed, it leaves me feeling a little cold, the amp that seemed to have sounded awesome before just cant cut it as my ears are used to the valve amps..

if i go a few weeks without playing a valve amp it can impress me again.

i wont ever go back to solid state now though, ive found my sound and i like it.

Re: Am I the only one?

I have a Roland Cube 60. At bedroom jamming volumes it isn't too good - you gotta put this mother****** really loud to get the best from it. But once you get there... oh yeah. A friend of mine has a Marshall DSL401 and he was floored with the tones I was getting! Slight creamy bluesy overdrive? Check. 70s Marshall about to melt? Check. Tight Metal machine? Check. Lush cleans? Check.

And it only weighs 30 pounds. :) I gigged with it a month ago, with a SM57 in front of it... in all modesty, another guy lugged his Crate Blue Voodoo with matching 4x12 cab to the stage, and my tone was much better than his.

Solid state can be pretty good, just like tubes can be pretty bad. It's a matter of getting the right amp.

you dont have to pay $1800 + for an amp ! ill sell you my mesa rectifier for $750 plus shipping! (shameless plug):fingersx:

Re: Am I the only one?

i love SS gear - have never owned tube gear ... i like my tone well enough and it has always been reliable, light weight, low $ to buy and own, etc ... i think i get better tone than the other guy in my band even though he plays a real nice crate tube amp w/ 3x 10" speakers

but i know tube tone is almost always better than mine (it was tough to unplug scott's R8 from joe's bogner at the SDUGD jam) ... i just don't want to lay out the benjamins and take on the weight for the incremental improvement in tone ... that said, i am getting itchy to take on a tube kit project for the winter just to learn about them and have fun putzing around in the shop

but i'll give a big ol "hell yeah" for ss tone !!

Re: Am I the only one?

I used to be in the "well, it's not like I'm Joe Satriani or anything, so I don't really need to go tube" camp. The problem was the Crate GT-1200 I was using couldn't stand up to my lead players' Dual Rec during shows, and it didn't cut through the mix unless I practically dimed the mids, which is something I hate to do. Also the more I played through the Mesa the more I started to realize the shortcomings of the Crate, and consequently whenever I was practicing by myself I'd always use the Mesa, since my friend was cool with me using it and it just sat at our practice space anyway. I'm not even a big fan of Mesas but the good tube heads seem to have this "alive" quality that makes it so much more fun to play and listen to. Anyway, I solved my problem on the cheap by picking up an old (92) Peavey Ultra head (forerunner to the Triple X) for $325- figure in another $200 for a cap job and a new set of tubes and I'm still under $600 for an amp that, even before the caps and tubes which I haven't gotten yet, sounds good enough that I'm no longer looking to the Mesa during solo practice and no longer getting dominated by it in band playing. So if money's the main reason for not going tube, buying an older one cheap and getting it fixed is one route you could go down.

Tonally, I have to admit the "in your face"-ness of SS can be very cool in certain applications, but it seems to me like every time I dial in a great tone on any SS amp it winds up being totally unusable when playing with a band. I will say, though, that SS amps seem to get along a lot better with pedals in general. Whatever floats it for ya.

I think that solid state has come a long way; my main gas is the vox valvetronix

...I think it is a socialization thing; we have collectively defined tube amps as the thing to have, and honestly, people look at amps at shows ...if you can ignore all that big ups to ya, and play what sounds good to you cause that is usually what matters anyway

I hate to disagree with people, but I don't think that's it.

I think it has to do with amp builders only putting good quality research into tube amps instead of advancing solid states. Since a tube amp can make them a hell of alot more money.

So far, I've never heard a solid state that can mimic a tube amp, but tech 21 stuff is about as close as it gets.

Re: Am I the only one?

LesStrat and the Peavey Bandit 112S were made for each other. They sound VERY good together.

OTOH, the Parker Fly Deluxe doesn't sound so good through the Bandit.
