How so? I would hope a person can recognize a good or bad tone whether it is theirs or somebody else's.

I mean in an overall existential way. You might think your tone is great, but 1000 people out there in the audience might hate it. We've all heard players (even pros) with the same type of tone for years, although on forums most players say their tone is terrible.

Is there a difference between amazing tone and great tone?

Great is when I've labored over EQ tweaks and knob twiddles on an amp plugin for hours, and wind up happy with the result.

Amazing is when I try a new plugin, pull up a random preset, and it's better than the one I toiled over.
