I've been listening to Amon Amarth's album, With Oden On Our Side, and I think their tone just kicks ass all the way though. Anyone know what guitars/pickups/amps they were using?
in this video i see a Gibson Explorer...I couldn't really make out the amps but they looked like the typical metal "hi-gain tube amp + a ton of rack EQ and tuners" set-up. Wish i could be more helpful.
a lot of metal bands are going with krank these days. even if you don't get their tone, you'll get something really great with those amps. there's a reason they cost a fortune.

I've always found metal tone relatively easy to achieve -- even on my 60's Bassman with a DS-1, i get a solid hi-gain tone. If your XXX isn't quite cutting it, I'd try stickin a Tubescreamer or something similar in front of it to 'tighten' everything up.
You know me well Jeff. I'm certainly not unhappy with my XXX; I love it. I was just curious as to what gear Amon Amarth used on the album because although it is a stereotypical metal tone, it's a slightly different flavour to my ears.
ok, well it sounds more like a really heavy crunch sound with a lot of bass. i don't really know how to explain it, it is like when you use a pedal made for a lot of distortion but you put the gain really low. so it's heavy, but weak sounding. like a tall fat guy.
