Amp for dorm room.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

My working amp that i use for everything is a cube 60. It's way tiny, and great for dorm room practice and loud enough to take to any jam session or most gigs.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

I've had my 60 watt 2x12 running in my dorm room before :laugh2: oh god knocking stuff off the desks was always fun.

most overkill ever - a guy i know had an engl halfstack in his pokey little dorm room! he attentuated, but i'm satisfied he could have knocked his own room down if he wasn't careful :D

My first year I moved in with my Peavey VTM-60 head and a Fender 4 x 12 cab. I also had my Peavey Mark IV head and Hartke 4 x 10 cab.

It was WAY more than I ever needed and mostly it just sat and didn't get played.

By the time I graduated I had my Fender Champ 12 and that was it. I wasn't up on new gear at the time and I remember seeing the Flextones and Spider amps. I really wish someone would have clued me into them as I likely would have snapped one up in a heartbeat.

+1

Vox owns the bedroom amplifer market.

+1 on the vox modellers. All the versatility you need, and high gain tones at low volumes. I would avoid the 30 watt ad30vt. Bad speaker/cabinet combination. I bought one and then listened to the 15 watt version and it sounds much better. I note that they did away with the 10 inch speaker in the newer XL valvetronix 30 watter, but there you won't have as many clean channel options.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

I just bought a Micro-cube. I am in an apartment and I will be sharing a house with 3 other people next year so... It is good for those purposes.

I was thinking Vox but didnt want to spend that much money on an amp I really dont want. 15 watts is really too loud anywho.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

I would go with a Microcube or Vox. ANY tube amp would be way too loud in my opinion, plus it's just for practicing, you don't really need to get a great tone there. Last year I ended up just playing through Garageband with my computer speakers. Now that I have a house this year, I get to bring up the Tiny Terror :14:.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

Get the Traynor YCV20. 15 watts, tube, really nice overdrive, 2 channels, 1x12, full 2 year "even if you break it" warranty. Around $700 brand new, comes with an eminence red coat "the governor" speaker. I have one for exactly the same reason as you and it's the first amp I've ever bought and felt really satisfied with. It can turn up to suprisingly loud levels for a 15 watter but it gets that great tube tone much earlier than alot of amps. 50 watts is probably too loud for a dorm room.

That
= :fing2:

Plexitube sounds REALLY good through the JC model on this amp-

I did an overly-lengthy review on the amp here a week or two ago prior to trying the Plexitube with it. I'm **really** digging it compared to the Valvetronix amps I've had in the past: the Plexitube adds alot of warmth for gain tones and does a better Marshall than the Valvetronix does. Tighter, less farty on the lows, much more sparkle. And the amount of EQ is staggering. It just sounds better through the RX than it did through the Valvetronix.

Despite really liking the RX I was ready to take it back cos it didnt have the marshall sound I need and use 75% of the time- and I had been trying to sell the plexitube for some time- sure glad no-one snagged it. This is a KILLER home rig now. I really need to get some clips up somehow

Even if ya don't need the Marshall tone- the RX is still an awesome little practice rig

Gotta watch out for that with those related threads at the bottom of the page. I think that explains a few long dead threads that have recently been resurrected.

I wonder if the guy was able to keep whatever amp he got in his dormroom or was he one of the guys who posted here complaining that the powers that be had told him he couldn't use an amp in his dorm room at all.
