Amp for dorm room.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

My Cube-15 serves me well. Does good cleans, ODs and metal type distortion. It doesnt have FX but i think the higher wattages do tho.

NOT a tube amp - it'll be too loud, man!!! Get a valvetronix, or a pod / v-amp to plug into an amp of some sort.

I agree.

It's a hard thing. I was a gigging musician through a good chunk of my college career. I went through points when all my gear did was collect dust and other times when there wasn't any in the room because it was dispersed between the rehearsal area and the guys house who carted gear to and from gigs.

The key is having something that can sound good in the smaller environment down to the point of headphones and have the capacity to be expandable. Digital amps would of been a perfect fit for me had they been around and as good as they are now.

As long as there's a decent PA then an amp can be miced. Even better, alot of digital amps you can go direct with.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

Try and find a Crate V16

It is a class A amp that plays clean and dirty...

Crate finally made another playable amp besides the blue voodoo

Re: Amp for dorm room.

I never found much enthusiasm for my shredding in the dorms, so I played alot of unamplified electric, and saved the rocking stuff for a real practice space with the band.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

Check out either a Roland Cube 15 or an old silverface Fender Champ. The Champ won't be too loud at 6 watts, and seemed to take pedals fairly well. (Enough to sound at least as good as any other headphone amp).

I have a Roland Cube 30 and it's a great practice amp. Lots of usable distortions, cleans and in-between tones. Some of the FX are better than others. The reverb, delay and phaser are all nice. Don't like the flanger, but that's not something I'd use anyway. Has a headphone/recording out, auxiliary in (for CD, drum machine etc.) and goes loud enough for modest band practices.

I'm sure a Vox Valvetronix would be great too. Just haven't got around to trying one yet.

at least if you bring a half stack its harder for someone to steal it

The funny thing about things that will inherently piss off your neighbors when you live in a dorm...

....they're not terribly inclined to move pretty quickly on your behalf when they see someone they don't know carting it out of your room.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

Okay I am moving into a dorm exactly four weeks from today. I have been looking at the Vox AD15VT and AD30VT or the Line 6 Spider 30 watt. Does anyone know if the 30 watt Vox is too loud for a dorm (I know there is headphones) and does it handle high gain applications well or would I need to stick a pedal in front of it?

Wow, no love for the Champ 600? 5watts, class A tube amp, you can run a exteral cab to. Just change the tubes and you've got a great little amp just perfect for the bedroom/dorm room. I'm still playing the hell out of mine.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

Yeah for old threads!

Anyway... the modeling stuff hadn't really hit the scene when I lived in a dorm. Having dealt with a neighbor who liked to show off his 12" powered subwoofer (same guy also lived to put on movies starting at 9PM... but I digress...) I know what it is like to loath someone who chooses not to respect the wishes, and later demands, of his neighbors. I did not want to be that guy.

I took my 25 watt 12" solid state to my dorm, and even that was WAY too much amp for a dorm room. Now I live in an apartment building, and while I still own that same 25 watt amp, I practice almost exclusively on a modeler (guitar port to be exact). Had PODs or GuitarPorts been around my freshman year of college I certainly would have had one. Do everyone a favor and use headphones. If you need to make noise, buy a set of powered speakers or plug into the aux of a stereo system.

I understand that everyone wants their tube amp tone all the time, but lugging that kind of an amp in a dorm situation is plain dumb, IMO.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

pod, roland microcube, or epi valve jr. though the latter will still be too loud. at least with the microcrube you can play thru headphones when you want, and be amplified at other times. seems like a lot of flexibility. i would give a shoutout to the zvex nano head as i have one too. but that sucker is LOUD!

Re: Amp for dorm room.

I'm in the same situation, and I've decided to get the 50 watt Vox Valvatronix.

50 watt?!!?! you may think, but it does have that wattage adjuster on the back, from 0.1 watts to 50, so you could turn it down to about 5 for easy practice, and then because I'm going into music, so I'll need an amp you can gig with, you can turn it up to the full 50 and play a gig.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

I am heading off to GC in a few to pickup either an AD60VTH and 2x12 or a AD120vtx for a new amp. My practice amp went down just as I was looking into getting a tube amp for gigging. The Vox will be able to do both with no problems of volume. I tried a Vox120vtx out last week at low low volumes and it sounded great, leagues better than my old Roland VGA3 (essentialy a Roland Cube).

Re: Amp for dorm room.

don't go to college :)

I went back to college with the goal of getting a degree for almost the entire expressed purpose of it being what I needed to get a job that could get me paid what I would need to afford the gear I wanted.

Re: Amp for dorm room.

Unless you've got some place where you can crank your amp, I wouldn't go with anything more than maybe 30 solid state watts. I dunno, it just seems excessive to take too much. I only had my Roland Micro Cube last year at the dorms and I even got complaints about that 5 watt little sucker. My Line 6 TonePort was definitely useful though. You'll appreciate some kind of headphone modeling stuff regardless of what other amp you decide on, for those inevitable late night urges to rock out :)
