What's up?
So I'm going to get an Orange Dual Terror head with an Orange PPC212OB. I need an amp mic to go with this. Right now I'm trying to decide between a Sennheiser e906 and a Shure SM57. I like playing progressive rock, mostly Pink Floyd. Playing a Warmoth HSH Tele through the amp setup mentioned before. ALL HELP AND COMMENTS ARE WELCOME!!!

Thanks :3

Re: Amp mics!!!

e609 is a classic guitar mic, as is the '57.

The 609 has more lower midrange push, but both are fairly easy to get great tones from.

Recently, I have gravitated towards using the '57 or a ribbon mic for guitar and the 609 on snare. :)

Re: Amp mics!!!

I am moving away from the Senns these days. The mids are almost a little phasey as odd as that sounds. Just doesn't sound right The Audix i5, SM57 and Apex205 are my choices these days

Re: Amp mics!!!

I use an Audix i5 as the main mic for my review stuff - it's classic like the 57 but just a smidge more scooped.

Lately I've been blending in a ribbon mic to get bigger clean tones, but for a straight up mic on cab tone you can't go wrong with a 57 or an i5.

Re: Amp mics!!!

I use a Sennheiser e609 all the time and am very satisfied with it. It's used for live performances as I don't record much. The shape is very handy....no bleed-over. I seriously doubt you'd be able to tell much difference in tone, for a live application.

Re: Amp mics!!!

Another thumbs up for the e609. It's usually the only mic I need on a guitar cab. If I'm looking for teh superfatness I add a 421.

Re: Amp mics!!!

It really depends on the amp. I've had the best luck with two SM57's (I have two different speaker types in my cab) about 2" from the grill, slightly off-axis.

I've been wanting to try the Heil PR30 as well. Every recording I hear done with that mic sounds great.

Re: Amp mics!!!

I have never been disappointed the times I have used SM57s for vocals, snare, or micing a cab.

Re: Amp mics!!!

I've used (3) mics on guitar cabinets: SM-57, MD-421 and R121. The SM-57 has the most bite, aggressiveness and boxiness, but may sound a bit thin in a sparse mix - in a dense mix it cuts and that's what you want a mic to do. The MD-421 is a little sweeter sounding - it's got less treble, a bit more warmth and with the bass roll off switches it's pretty versatile, but it lacks that aggressiveness that the SM-57 does and for recording, I find there are things that do a better job for guitars. I went through a phase of trying to use just the MD-421 for guitars and it worked, but I think I liked the results of the SM-57 ultimately better and there is a significant price difference between the two. The R121 is my go-to mic. It's fat, it's warm, it's detailed, it's got that signature ribbon mic richness to it that the others lack, but it's not as aggressive as either the MD-421 or SM-57. An ideal mix is a SM-57 and R-121 - you'll get the bite of the SM-57 with the body of the R-121. These days since I'm not recording mixes with lots of tracks I prefer just the rich sound of the R-121 solo on the speaker cone. It's all personal preference. I've never tried the e609, but honestly with the other mics being such staples, I've never seen a reason to start trying it.

at bb kings place in memphis they use heil mics on everything and i LOVE the pr30 they use. i have a pr35 which i like a lot but i really want a pr30

Re: Amp mics!!!

I've used 57's forever, they always deliver. But I too like the 609's I did a few gigs with a sound guy who used them and I heard recordings and thought it sounded really good. I also like the way you can just lay the cable over a cab and you don't need a stand. If I had to buy a mic for my rig I would probably go with a 609 for gigs. I think the 609 has more punch yet is a warmer sounding mic.

Re: Amp mics!!!

I'd go for the 57. Sounds good enough and has the added factor that you can't break it. Don't matter how good your mic is if it stops working. After a thousand plus gigs I've never had a Shure mic fail on me.

Re: Amp mics!!!

All of those mic work fine. Some people even use EV Re-20s or Shure SM7Bs. You may want to use a combination of an E609 and SM 57 to get the best of both worlds and they're cheap.

Exactly what I do, 57s are great all rounders and fairly cheap (you can try 58s as well if you have one or can find them cheap). Audix i5s are meant to be similar but different and great on guitars. If I am not using 57s (I usually use at least 1) I would be using a U87 or 414 and both of them are two expensive to consider tbh. Personally not a fan of the e609 don't like how it sounds with VOX type amps (I have heard it is better for higher gain sounds though.)
