Amp Mod-Guys, I Have Some Questions

I love the crunch channel on my XXX, it makes hte amp worth it alone, but I spent some time with a 5150 head yesterday....oh boy, one trick pony, but is that one seriously sick trick! :saeek: Perfect lead tone IMO!

The cleans on the XXX...yeah, it's a Peavey metal amp, not the best cleans.

What I'd like to have done is have the ultra channel modded or rebuilt to 5150 specs, and the clean channel to some sort of Fender or Laney specs, and possibly a 120/50/25 power rating switch.

1. Is this even possible to put the 5150 into my XXX's ultra channel? That would be the perfect metal amp!
2. How much would this cost?
3. Is the power rating switch hard/expensive to do?

due to PV amps being on very thin PC boards, I would say doubtful...I'll say this for sure, I would not take that project on...XXX and 5150 have different transformers with different voltages, different tone stacks, thi list goes on...you could have some mods done to the XXX but it still weouldn't be a 5150...nor would it have the lead sound of a 5150.

I figured as much...and with general mods like that costing 500+, I might as well get a 5150 for 450 off ebay.

I'll tell ya this, if you want a crunch head that does have a very Fender type clean tone check out the Marshall JCM2000...I was amazed by how good the clean tone is on that amp...and I play throught a Fender Twin Reverb most of the time!

The fendery cleans really isn't too important to me, I just figured if I'd get the head modded, I might as well get a killer clean channel put in and have the ultimate amp.

I don't like the dsl or tsl's gain channels...but I've never liked any Marshall except for the 6100LM 30th anniversary, which is stock with 6L6 tubes. I find the low end on others to be loose and the overall amp not to be super articulate, which I need.

Shoot Jeff Seal an e-mail at his website, www.speakersurgeon.com or Scott Splawn at his website www.splawnguitars.com . If one of them aren't able to do what you want, chances are it can't be done. As for the price, yeah you can pick up a 5150 for around $500, but if you can get it all in one package wouldn't that be worth the same $500?

I don't know if it can be done, but these are the guys to check with.

Always figure in the cost of labor, parts, and maybe shipping or tax.
By the time you've made a $500 amp sound a little bit better, you could have sold it, added $400, and bought a $1300 head for $900, used. That's my logic, at least.
Keep in mind, most of the times you've heard a DSL or Dual Rec, it was at a volume that the amp wasn't made for. From now on, get 50W heads/4-12's, and get them cooking on 6, instead of 100/120W heads idling at 2 1/2.

I'd agree with you, GJ, but The XXX and the 5150 are the two best sounding amps I've heard, and yes, at proper volume. I don't use a 4x12, way too loud, 2x12 is plenty. The DSL's and Recto's I've played were 50 watters through a Marshall 4x12 at 4-5, and neither really did it for me, at all.
