Amp models in Vox VT XL?

A couple of question for you guys.

First, someone posted a link to a Vox VT forum - anyone know that?

Second, I'm not really an amp data base and I don't know what amps they are modeling in the VT XL line except the obvious ones like the AC30, Dual Rectifier and Fender. Does anyone have the list of amps they modeled?

www.voxamps.co.uk

They have all that info and more on the site.

I have already heard, from 2 reviews, that the new ad15vt-XL has the same crappy 10 inch speaker/cabinet combo that the older ad30vt has, and should be avoided. The new AD30VT-XL has a 12 inch speaker, like the older 50 watt.

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

I have the amp Mr. B. thanks for the tip. I just don't know what "real" amp certain models are because they can't say the name. :)

I'll take a guess at a few of them.

Overdrive Special = Dumble
Blackface 2x12 = Fender Twin
Buzzsaw = Plexi, Marshall
Modern = Marshall TSL
Thrashed = Marshall modded JCM 800

So, Give us a complete review of the amp. We're all waiting....:opcorn:

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

Lol, nice popcorn!

Here's a mini review and I'm going to post another clip this afternoon with it doing a straight up rock/pop song, not metal.

The look of the amp is great I think and the size of the 30 watt is perfect for small gigs and studio use.
Overall the amp models are voiced a little on the fizzy side but with a bit of work you can dial that back on most of them. The AC30 model sounds like they hyped it up a bit and I kinda wish they didn't, maybe the 30 tone is there in a more authentic way I haven't really tried to dial it in yet. I'm playing a Dean Hardtail Standard which isn't showing the full potential of the models imo - with really nice pickups I bet this thing takes on another level of quality. There is also a bit of a sameness to some of the models as they took a certain amp and revoiced it and changed the class rating for some models again I think you could tweak them to be more different. My big complaint is that you can't overwrite the factory presets and it only has two save locations. The speaker sounds pretty good to me as does the cabinet except it can get bass heavey in a bad way on some models. Over all I give it a 7.5 to 8 on a scale of 10.

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

Have you played the older VT series to compare it to ?

I've heard some reports that while still good, the XL is a bit less dynamic and errr, "real" sounding compared to the older VT and VTX series which always had great reviews in terms of the feel of the amp.

I play mostly hard rock/punk style so love the tones of GNR, Social Distortion, Sex Pistols, Rancid, etc. I don't per say need the metal tones, but at the same time, I don't need much in the way of cleans either.

I'm sort of stuck in the middle with the VT maybe not being hard rock enough, and yet the XL series perhaps being a bit too over the top metal.

I'll hope to give it a try still when I can find one at a local shop but certainly hope its far more musical than the line6 spider stuff which is just comical in its level of gain and fizz.

No disrespect to anyone who likes those tones, but I sort of cringe whenever I hear a kid in the shop playing one with the "insane" model cranked up. Just so over the top its like a bad parody of itself IMHO.

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

Yes, I owned the other model VT, they are almost the same except the models and the new 12" speaker. It's just the factory settings that are a little fizzed I'm thinking.

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

I have not tried a XL one yet but I love my 50 watt VT. I really like the models and it cranks with tons of gain. If I ever need more gain I just hit it with a overdrive pedal.

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

I own the 30 watt XL. It's a good little amp and it's a keeper IMHO. Dynamics go out the window when gain is increased and this little amp was designed for gain on top of gain. The lower gain models have plenty of dynamics though. The models are pretty decent overall and can be dialed in with little problem. The main difference between this amp and the regular chrome series amps is the speaker improvement for the 30 watt and the models are EQ'ed a bit better. The models can be a tad hairy, but that can be dialed out on all of them but one IMHO. The high gain models don't sound terribly different from each other. They seem to just be higher and higher gain versions of the same amp. Each click of the model knob just turns the gain to 11 each time. So you won't be getting an uberschall, triple rec, roccaforte, VHT, etc. You're just getting more and more gain with each model really from what my tin ears can tell. The good part is that it sounds pretty good and can really sound BREWTALZ if you dial it in right :eyecrazy:.

My biggest problem with the amp is that you can't change the presets that are built in for each amp model. I don't expect those presets to be footswitcheable etc, but it sure would be nice to be able to alter the presets for each amp since it has the ability to hold those presets in the first place. There's one model that has an octave effect built in to the preset for the amp and it's simply horrible. I don't like octave effects with high gain.

What it does have is the tube feel while playing and has tons of gain on tap without using a pedal. It's a neat little amp for the money, but I sure do wish they would make a head version in 100 watts for this amp. It would be utilized for certain if they did make such an amp.

Re: Amp models in Vox VT XL?

I picked up a AD60VTX off Craigslist. I'm still experimenting with settings and tones, but so far I'm absolutely loving the JCM 800 setting. This amp is definitely a gigging amp. Unlike other modeling amps, it sounds way better when cranked up rather than at lower volumes.
