**??Amp Question??**

I have a Marshall AVT 150X, I would like to replace the valves\tubes?
My style of music is simliar to that of EVH/ Nuno Bettencourt.

What would you recommend to put in the Marshall AVT 150X, to get a similar sound to the above mentioned players?

Thankyou! :)

Re: **??Amp Question??**

Is it one of those valvestate amps? If so, I'm afraid that there's only a single preamp tube. You won't really get much by changing it.

Re: **??Amp Question??**

That's true, you won't get radical change in tone, but you can notice the subtle change if you have good ears. Nevertheless, get a high gain 12AX7 by JJ tubes. I recommend you to order it from Bob at eurotubes.com

I know this for a fact, I own AVT20 before I upgrade my gear.

Replacing the tube won't do much.

If people tell you it will, they've probably got insanely sensitive ears.

To be honest, if you're not able to get close enough to EVH now, than that tube won't help at all.

Re: **??Amp Question??**

But, if you do want to change that one tube, a JJ will likely cost you under $20 shipped.

I think a speaker change will have more effect, but a single 12AX7 is cheap. Give it a shot.

EDIT: You really want to get that AVT "warmer" or "smoother". The JJ will help this. I also think a speaker swap to something like an Eminence Governor would help. But, you are only going to effect your sound a few degrees. You may be better off starting with an all-tube Marshall amp.

Only you know what is in your pocketbook and how much yout time is worth to you.

Re: **??Amp Question??**

I think that changing to a smaller all tube amp that you can cranck might do you better... EVH raised the volume on his amp to the max and IMO it has more influence then the tube you're using... my guess is that you don't raise the volume so high on a 150 watt amp...

I'm into finding myself a tube amp kit now (not a PLexi however) and I saw a few small british amp kits on different websites... now buying something from a supplier to get a very specific tone is problematic by all means...but there's a bigger chance it will get you closer to the brown sound... if you can check out smaller Laney's it might also be better then these amp for the job...

One more thing, a Marshall AVT is my main amp for the last year (I don't remmember the exact model, it's in the practice room and I'm not)... It's a good sounding amp but both gain channels don't sound snything like EVH... I've tried it with a few guitars... it gets closer with sweeter sounding guitars (maybe your problem is not in the amp?) and sounds nothing like it with screaming metal guitars...
