Amp that does Mesa tone

Hey guys,

I just can't justify spending almost $2,000 for that Mesa amp I want.

Is there another type of amp out there that can do or comes close to the Mesa sound for less?

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

sorry for the bad news, but nothing else will sound like a Mesa. Either save up or look for another kind of tone

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

Check into B-52 amps. They're supposed to be the poor man's Mesa. I had an AT-100 for a bit, but decided that I liked Marshally sounding amps better so off it went.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

man these threads make my head hurt...i want X but don't want to buy X, i rather buy Y and hope it sounds like X. i just don't get it. it's not like your a 15yr old kid that we should give a life lesson to and tell you...save up for what you really want or you'll be sorry in the long run....by your age you should know that already.

if you want mesa sound, get a mesa. if you don't want to spend that much, get a used mesa (loads of good deals out there if you look). if you don't like the idea of buying a used amp and don't want to buy a new mesa due to the price....find a new tone you want because you're not getting mesa tone from another amp just like you won't get marshall tone from a vox etc etc.

problem solved.

Look used man. If you're lookin for a recto, I've seen em around a lot for around 800-1300 used, depending on which model. The mark series hovers around that area too.

Lotta people have called the peavey triple XXX the poor man's recto. Those go for much cheaper, granted. But, they sound a bit cheaper too. IMO.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

there's lots of cool reasonably priced amps around by peavy, crate, randall, etc. do some test rides and see what inspires. forget the mesa if it's too steep and just see what works for you in your price range.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

Although I agree with XSSIVE, here's some ideas.

Peavey XXX, or XXL for really low $
Randall amps are marketed to the same demographic as Mesa, so check some out.
Crate Blue Voodoo. This really is the poor-man's Rectifier.
Vox Valvetronix AD120VTH head
Line 6 Flextone HD
Line 6 HD147

First, always watch ending auctions on Rectifiers with cash in hand, and snipe one at the last minute with a proxy bid. The 50W Single Rec will probably be your best bet.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

If he goes the vox route, he will need an EQ to run through the effects loop. The recto model is fizzy and needs EQ help to sound it's best.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

Mesa F-30s are awesome amps and the combo usually goes for 700 bucks or something

+1! Even though the F-30 is the least expensive of the Mesas, it still sounds great. There are tons of useable tones and it gets quite loud. The tone is a little different from the recto tone, but to me that just means less top end fizzle. You should check one of them out. A used F-50 would probably be around 700 or 800 too... or a new single rectifier for a little over 1000.

I tried the Vox Valvetronix before I got my roadster, and the mesa model was pretty fizzy. None of the models on there really had any girth. If you want real tone modelling amps just won't do it.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

well i went that route at one point....bought a Peavey XXL ....excellent SS tone....but not Mesa.....depends on what sound you want really.....i eventually up and bought a Triple Rectifier.....now for thigns in comparrison.....the XXX sounds like poo in comparison .... way too digital/thin sounding IMO .... but when it comes to just awesome distorted tone at a reasonable price ...Peavey 6505+ ....i think my buddy paid 1200 new....thing is rippin and certainly holds it's own against the mesa....but i cant say it sounds like a mesa....just great tone.....then again thats assuming you want it for rock/hard rock/metal/hardcore .... if not then i cant really help you there....

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

You could always go back into Mesa's lineup. There are some of the older, smaller Mesas that while not as high gain or as knob-covered, will get you a great Mesa tone for under $500. Check eBay.

I dunno bout that exactly. I think the valvetronix does pretty darned well if you're willing to run the EQ like I said.

Carvin V3, so users call it the recto-killer

Yes, it's a Recto- Killer. Will it sound identical to a Recto? No. I tried a recto, I managed to get the killer signature tone from it. The V3 I can get something similar, but different in its own since it has EL34 tubes- but you can change them to 6550's or 5881's.

It's alot more versatile, and I would buy a V3 over a mesa any day.

Re: Amp that does Mesa tone

If you want a Mesa, like everyone here is saying, get the Mesa ;) You'd be amazed how cheap you can snag one used on eBay. I've seen most models routinely sell for around 1k or less so right there you're looking at half the cost than you originally anticipated.

So, forget Carvin, forget Line 6, forget Peavey and all those other amps that come "close" to what you like about Mesa. Go with your ears and buy the Mesa and be done with it.
