i have little to no experience with these things. i know how to change them and thats about it. i tryed to replace the two in my fender amp and only one of the new ones works. i am also planning on replacing the ones in my marshall tsl. which ones should i buy.

That's odd. Unplug them and plug them in again.
It's not uncommon to come across a bad tube, so hopefully
you can exchange that set for a new duet.

If you guys are looking for tubes, the best for cheapest is
revolutionguitar.com My buddy Todd owns it. He knows
gear and tone, and is a distributor for Tesla, Svetlana, GT, EI.

My favorite combo is Svetlana power tubes and Tesla JJ or EI pres.

gearjoneser nailed it. I buy my tubes from Todd at Revolution guitar, and I use JJ's for pre-amp and Svetlana "Winged C 's " for Power tubes. ( JCM 800 2204's ).

see heres the thing. i have no clue what you guys are talking about. could you explaine like how a tube works and what they do to effect your sound. last night i took tha back off my marshall and there were 2 long tubes and 3 little ones and then one that was in a little metal casing with a spring it. how do i know wich ones are wich.

Short answer to one of your questions- The long ones are the power tubes, the short ones are your preamp and rectifier tubes. The exact type of tube depends on what amp you are looking at.

Here is a great background document that gives a breakdown of the basic workings of tube amps (including what tubes are). It may be more than you are looking for, but it is a great start:

Here is another link that may give you more tube basics and some idea of which tubes are used for which purpose (and reviews of brands):

Hope that helps.

I bought from Todd a couple of times and he is really a super guy to deal with, highly recommended to everyone!:bigok:

As others have said, the big ones are your power tubes and the smaller tubes are your preamp section. The one covered by the metal casing is also a preamp tube. For the most part, the little ones make your distortion (especially in modern amps) and the big ones make your amp loud. The big ones can also distort, but it has to be turned up real loud for that to happen. Please note, the above is a very loose descpriptions of what those tubes do....

Each brand of tubes sound different. Some more than others. Read all the descriptions of how they sound and ask your vendor for recommendations for the style that you play.

in your marshall the small preamp tubes are 12ax7's and the big ones are most likely el34's depending on the model you have, which i am curious to.We could be more help you knowing what model marshall you have. the preamp tubes can be swapped directly and easily, the power tubes need to be biased by an amp tech after being changed.

That link will help answer some questions you have.good luck

i have a jcm tsl602. im getting funny noises from it. it sounds like somebody has taken the pickguard off and is rubbing my wires wth there hand. it happens even when my guitar is not plugged in. it happens even when the amp is turned all the way down and the stabndby switch is off and on. i took a look at it and i didnt find anything wrong with it. it has to be the tubes right?

Re: amp tubes

It could be other things.. it could be bad shielding... bad wiring... if it makes whistling sounds... more than likely... it is a tube issue..

if it gets microphonic.. that is when you really know..

Re: amp tubes

With preamp tubes, you can pretty much just get away with swapping them.

With output tubes, you need to know how to bias your amp, or take it to an amp tech to have it done. Even if you don't damage your amp (and you might) by not setting the bias properly, it won't sound as good as it should.

Pay the amp tech, and get it done right. It shouldn't cost all that much.
