I've played the 65 amps London at reasonable volumes and it definitely doesn't get that swarm of bees tone, more like blackface fender to vintage lightly overdriven plexi.

I'd love to play an OD-50 one day, looks like a pretty cool amp.

The 65's were the most intriguing and most talked about amps at NAMM. And like I said, they seemed capable of producing everything from blackface Fender tone to heavily overdriven tone...just based on what I heard coming from the booth. But most of the time I heard them being demoed the player was going for a heavily overdriven tone. Maybe not quite the Bagful of Angry Bumble Bees tone I heard almost everywhere else but still heavily overdriven.

It just seems to be what most of the guys dialed in most often.

Re: Amplifiers at NAMM...

Lew,
the 65 Amps 'London' is like a cross between a Marshall 18 watt and a Vox AC 15. It has a solid bottom end, moreso than the newer handwired Marshall 18 watters I've heard.
What's cool is that it has that EL 84 crunch, with harmonics, and a solid bottom.

however, I think the model they were demoing at NAMM was the new 30 watt, EL 34 amp.

You must not have gone to the Fuchs booth...My TDS 50 is absolutley incredible.

I did. Nice amps. Kind of a rip off of Dumble's hard work but very nice amps. I guess I'm just getting tired of that buzzy overdriven tone...even when I hear Robben Ford or Larry Carlton (two of my favorite players) wailing through thier Dumbles, I wish they'd back off on the overdrive a bit. Just sounds so...generic! Lew

What amps did you like best at the show Curly? You saw and heard pretty much the same stuff I did! Lew

matchless01.jpg

that amp had 2 10s and a 12.

well, I liked the little Star Amp you played, partly because it sounded so much bigger than it was.

actually, I think there were so many amps I didn't hear... Fuchs, THD, VHT. I would've liked to check some of the Victorias - what little we heard of the Regal sounded pretty good, though.

there are just so many good amps these days, it's hard to keep up.

Re: Amplifiers at NAMM...

Well Curly...you KNOW what I think of Matchless amps: they're my favorites! I have two: a Chieftan and an SC-30. Guess I should've mentioned them right at the top of this thread. I guess I didn't because Mark Sampson isn't part of Matchless any more and I wish he was! Lew
